A specialist Mental Health Hospital School in Camberwell is looking for an experienced Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) to support pupils aged 4–19 with complex mental health needs across two hospital-based sites.

Position details:

  • Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) position to start in September 2026

  • Long-term agency role with potential for ongoing opportunities

  • Full-time position only (5 days per week)

  • Supporting pupils with significant mental health needs within a specialist hospital school

  • Delivering and supporting learning across a range of subjects, with a strong focus on Secondary Maths and Science

  • Small class sizes and highly personalised learning programmes

  • Based primarily at one hospital site, with occasional travel between both school sites

  • Trial days taking place as soon as possible before the September start

  • Location: Camberwell

The successful Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) will have:

  • A HLTA qualification is desirable; however, candidates with substantial relevant experience will also be considered

  • Experience working as a Teaching Assistant with responsibility for leading lessons or covering classes in a teacher's absence

  • Strong Secondary Maths and Science subject knowledge with confidence supporting both subjects

  • Experience supporting children and young people with SEN, SEMH, or complex mental health needs

  • Excellent curriculum knowledge and the ability to adapt learning to meet individual needs

  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills

  • A calm, resilient, and compassionate approach to supporting vulnerable young people

  • The ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team

  • A genuine passion for supporting pupils to achieve both academically and emotionally

You will need:

  • A fully enhanced Child and Adult DBS

  • Full-time availability (5 days per week)

  • Availability to attend a trial as soon as possible ahead of a September start

  • Experience supporting pupils with SEN, SEMH, or mental health needs

  • Confidence delivering lessons independently and supporting learning across a range of subjects
