Our client, Ringway Jacobs, a leading provider of integrated highways management, is seeking a Highways Inspector to join its Essex Highways partnership team.

Essex Highways manages and maintains one of the largest highway networks in the UK, including approximately 5,000 miles of roads and 5,000 miles of footways. Working in partnership with Essex County Council, this role offers the opportunity to play a vital part in delivering a safe, sustainable, and effective highway network for all road users.

The Role

As a Highways Inspector, you will be responsible for undertaking routine Monthly, Quarterly and Annual highway inspections to identify defects and assess risks in accordance with the highway maintenance strategy. You will use mobile data capture technology to record findings and support the effective prioritisation of maintenance activities.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Carrying out inspections and recording the condition of the public highway to ensure it is maintained to standards required by the Highways Authority.
  • Identifying and reporting defects using mobile data capture devices, enabling delivery teams and utility providers to plan and prioritise remedial works in line with Essex County Council policies.
  • Providing professional advice, guidance and information to stakeholders, partners and members of the public.
  • Responding to customer enquiries and complaints, including explaining inspection outcomes and maintenance decisions where appropriate.
  • Investigating accident claim locations, reviewing works history and specifications for compliance with safety requirements.
  • Preparing supporting documentation and attending court hearings when required to provide evidence as a professional witness.
  • Working towards individual and team performance objectives within the organisation’s performance management framework.
  • Undertaking additional duties as required to support operational service delivery.

About You

The successful candidate will demonstrate:

  • Knowledge of Highway Authority and Local Government policies, procedures and practices relating to highways maintenance.
  • Understanding of Health and Safety legislation, including traffic management requirements and Construction (Design and Management) Regulations.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to research issues thoroughly and identify practical solutions.
  • The ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with colleagues and stakeholders.
  • A logical and evidence-based approach to handling challenges and resolving conflicts.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • The ability to build positive working relationships with contractors, elected members, customers and the wider public.
