Overview
Our client is seeking three Highways Projects Supervisors to support the safe, efficient and right-first-time delivery of highways works across East Sussex. This role is site-facing and focuses on supervising operatives and subcontractors, coordinating day-to-day delivery, and ensuring works meet safety, quality and programme requirements.
You will be working on council highways schemes for a Tier 1 contractor. This is a full-time site-based role with flexibility where operationally appropriate.
Key Responsibilities
Safe delivery and setting people to work
- Set operatives and subcontractors to work with clear scope, task briefings, risk controls and quality expectations.
- Confirm competence, inductions, briefings and permits before work starts.
- Review RAMS, permits, temporary works controls and site constraints.
- Stop work and escalate where conditions or behaviours do not support safe delivery.
Project delivery and programme control
- Coordinate labour, plant, materials, access, utilities interfaces and traffic management.
- Maintain daily records, progress updates, photographs, site diaries and production information.
- Manage local site constraints and escalate risks, blockers and changes promptly.
Quality management
- Lead quality checks, inspections, hold points and handover records.
- Ensure works follow approved drawings, specifications, permits and contract requirements.
- Identify defects and non-conformances early and ensure corrective actions are closed out.
People, stakeholder and customer focus
- Provide clear direction and coaching to site teams.
- Maintain professional communication with clients, supply chain and the public.
- Support a culture of Zero Harm, collaboration and continuous improvement.
Typical Duties
- Site set-up, access arrangements and temporary traffic management.
- Service avoidance, breaking ground, excavation and reinstatement.
- Surfacing, kerbing, paving, drainage and associated civils works.
- Regular checks of safety, quality, productivity and environmental controls.
- Coordination with utilities, street works, traffic management and design teams.
- Progressive inspection and record keeping for handover and as-built information.
Skills, Knowledge and Experience
Core highways competence
- Highways construction, maintenance or improvement works including excavation, reinstatement, surfacing, kerbing, paving, drainage and street furniture.
- Ability to plan, brief, supervise and record daily works in a live highway environment.
- Understanding of quality assurance, inspection records, hold points and defect management.
- Awareness of commercial implications of site decisions, delays, change and dayworks.
- Confident use of digital tools for site records, programming and document control.
Essential training and certifications
- SSSTS or SMSTS.
- CSCS card aligned to supervisory role.
- NRSWA Supervisor (for street works supervision).
- EUSR Safe Digging / Avoiding Underground Services.
- Temporary traffic management awareness or relevant sector scheme competence.
- First Aid at Work or Emergency First Aid (as required).
- Full UK driving licence.
Desirable experience
- Supervising teams in highways, civils, utilities or public realm environments.
- Using RAMS, permits, inspections and daily records to control site delivery.
- Client-facing or public-facing experience where communication and customer impact are key.
