Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA)

Location: Liverpool
Contract: Full Time
Start Date: Sept 26

We are seeking an experienced, enthusiastic and resilient Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) to join our team. This is an exciting opportunity for a confident individual with strong experience in behaviour management to play a key role in supporting pupils to achieve their full potential.

The successful candidate will work closely with teachers, the SENCO and pastoral staff to provide high-quality support for pupils, including those who may present with challenging behaviour or require additional support with their emotional, social and behavioural needs.



Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver planned learning activities and, where appropriate, lead small groups or whole-class sessions.
  • Provide targeted support to pupils with a range of additional needs.
  • Use effective behaviour management strategies to promote positive behaviour and engagement in learning.
  • Support pupils in developing emotional regulation, resilience and positive relationships.
  • De-escalate challenging situations calmly and effectively.
  • Work closely with teaching and pastoral staff to implement individual behaviour and support plans.
  • Build positive, professional and consistent relationships with pupils.
  • Monitor pupil progress and behaviour and provide feedback to relevant staff.
  • Contribute to creating a safe, inclusive and positive learning environment.
  • Cover classes and undertake additional responsibilities in line with the HLTA role when required.


Essential Requirements

The successful candidate will have:

  • A recognised HLTA qualification or HLTA status, or relevant equivalent experience.
  • Significant experience of working with children or young people in an educational setting.
  • Strong and proven experience in behaviour management, including supporting pupils who may display challenging behaviour.
  • A calm, confident and consistent approach when managing difficult situations.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • The ability to build positive relationships while maintaining clear professional boundaries and high expectations.
  • Experience of using positive behaviour strategies and de-escalation techniques.
  • The ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a wider team.
  • A strong commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
