HSEQ Manager

Bowden Jones Recruitment

We are recruiting an experienced Health, Safety, Environmental & Quality Manager to lead and continually improve HSEQ standards across a growing, project-led organisation.

This is a hands-on role requiring a visible presence across operational sites. You will act as the business’s lead authority on HSEQ matters, ensuring legal compliance, improving on-site performance and developing a positive culture in which safety and quality are genuinely owned at every level.

You will also take responsibility for the company’s compliance accreditations and lead its progression towards ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certification.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide practical HSEQ leadership across all sites and operations.
  • Conduct regular site inspections, audits and safety walks.
  • Identify risks, performance trends and opportunities for improvement.
  • Oversee risk assessments, method statements, incident reporting, investigations and corrective actions.
  • Challenge unsafe working practices and promote better standards through coaching and engagement.
  • Work closely with site teams, managers and supervisors to strengthen safety ownership.
  • Coordinate toolbox talks, safety briefings and relevant training.
  • Manage external compliance and assurance schemes, including RISQS, SafeContractor and similar accreditations.
  • Maintain audit evidence, renewal requirements and compliance records.
  • Act as the main contact for HSEQ-related queries from clients, insurers, regulators and certification bodies.
  • Develop and maintain an effective Quality Management System.
  • Lead the business through ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certification, including gap analysis, process mapping, internal audits and management reviews.
  • Develop environmental policies, objectives and operational controls.
  • Report clearly to senior management on performance, risks, audits and improvement plans.

About you

You will be a confident and pragmatic HSEQ professional who is equally comfortable advising senior management and engaging directly with site-based teams.

To be considered, you should have:

  • Previous experience in an HSEQ, Health & Safety, Environmental, Quality or Compliance management role.
  • Strong knowledge of UK health and safety legislation and its practical application.
  • Experience conducting site inspections, audits and safety engagement activities.
  • Experience managing RISQS, SafeContractor or comparable compliance schemes.
  • Experience developing or maintaining Quality Management Systems.
  • Involvement in ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certification or preparation.
  • Strong communication skills and the confidence to challenge working practices constructively.
  • A practical, solutions-focused approach to compliance and continuous improvement.

Desirable qualifications and experience

  • NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent.
  • Grad IOSH or Chartered IOSH status.
  • ISO Internal Auditor or Lead Auditor qualification.
  • Experience within construction, property, infrastructure or another project-based environment.

This is an excellent opportunity to take ownership of the HSEQ function, influence standards across the organisation and play a central role in its continued development.
