HTPEM Fuel Cell Design Validation and Testing Engineer

Envisage Recruitment Limited

Fuel Cell Design Validation and Testing Engineer
Location: Kemble, UK (on-site)
Salary/Rate: £55 per hour, 6 month contract
Shift Pattern/Working Hours: Standard working week, days

This is a contract opportunity with a specialist engineering company working on next generation HTPEM (High Temperature Proton Exchange Membrane) fuel cell systems for electric propulsion applications.
The business is scaling up its test and validation function and needs an engineer who can get stuck into
stack testing straight away.

You'll work closely with design, materials and systems engineering teams on a technology that's central to the future of hydrogen propulsion.

This is hands-on work. You'll spend real time at the test bench, not just reviewing data from a desk.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support design validation and verification (DV/V) plans for fuel cell components and assemblies
  • Plan and run performance, durability and reliability testing under varying operating conditions
  • Analyse polarisation curves, power density, efficiency and degradation data to track performance
  • Investigate test failures and lead root cause analysis using structured problem solving methods
  • Support stack testing and characterisation, including performance mapping and optimisation of operating conditions
  • Work with design, simulation, materials, manufacturing and controls teams to resolve technical issues
  • Contribute to design reviews, tolerance analysis, DFMEA/PFMEA and engineering change activity
  • Maintain test procedures, validation reports and technical documentation to a high standard
  • Ensure all testing complies with relevant safety, quality and engineering standards

The Person

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Electrochemistry, Energy Engineering or a related discipline
  • Relevant industry or research background in fuel cells, electrochemical systems, hydrogen technologies or energy systems
  • Solid understanding of HTPEM fuel cell operating principles and electrochemical performance
  • Practical experience testing, characterising and evaluating fuel cell performance
  • Familiarity with fuel cell components such as MEA, catalyst layers, membranes, gas diffusion layers, bipolar plates, seals and stack hardware
  • Comfortable working with data analysis tools such as MATLAB or Excel
  • Strong technical documentation and communication skills

This is a chance to work at the sharp end of hydrogen propulsion development, on a technology that's moving fast and where your test data will directly shape design decisions. If that sounds like your kind of challenge, we'd like to hear from you.
