HV Substation Primary Design Engineer
Salary: Up to £95,000 + Welcome Bonus
We are currently recruiting for an experienced HV Substation Primary Design Engineer to join a leading organisation operating within the UK power and energy sector.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced engineer to work on major HV/EHV substation and power infrastructure projects, taking responsibility for primary electrical design from concept through to detailed design and delivery.
The Role
As a Primary Design Engineer, you will be responsible for developing and delivering high-quality primary electrical designs for HV/EHV substations.
You will work closely with project managers, secondary design engineers, civil/structural teams, clients, contractors and other stakeholders to ensure designs are technically compliant, constructable and delivered to programme.
Key Responsibilities
- Produce and review HV/EHV substation primary electrical designs.
- Develop substation layouts and primary plant arrangements.
- Design and specify HV switchgear, transformers, busbars, CTs, VTs/CVTs, disconnectors, earth switches and associated primary equipment.
- Produce and review single-line diagrams, schematic drawings and equipment specifications.
- Develop equipment layouts, clearances and interface requirements.
- Ensure designs comply with relevant UK standards, client specifications and DNO/TSO requirements.
- Support technical studies, design reviews and value-engineering exercises.
- Liaise with clients, suppliers, contractors and internal engineering teams.
- Review supplier drawings, technical submissions and equipment data.
- Support construction and commissioning teams with technical queries and design clarification.
- Identify and resolve design issues throughout the project lifecycle.
- Ensure designs meet programme, quality, safety and commercial requirements.
- Contribute to design assurance, technical reports and project documentation.
Experience Required
We are looking for candidates with a strong background in HV/EHV substation primary design.
Ideally, you will have:
- Proven experience designing HV/EHV substations.
- Strong knowledge of primary substation equipment and layouts.
- Experience with 132kV, 275kV and/or 400kV substation projects would be highly desirable.
- Experience producing and reviewing detailed electrical design documentation.
- Good understanding of substation electrical clearances and equipment interfaces.
- Experience working within DNO, transmission, ICP, EPC or utility environments.
- Knowledge of relevant UK standards and technical requirements.
- Experience working on projects from concept/design through to construction and commissioning.
- Strong communication and stakeholder-management skills.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
Desirable
- Experience within the UK transmission and distribution sector.
- Experience working on National Grid / DNO / ICP projects.
- Knowledge of G81 and/or other relevant utility standards.
- Experience with major infrastructure or grid connection projects.
- Chartered Engineer status or working towards chartership.
- Experience mentoring or technically supporting junior engineers.
Package
Salary: Up to £95,000 depending on experience
