Inquest and Civil Litigation Lawyer

A leading public sector organisation is seeking an experienced Inquest and Civil Litigation Lawyer to join its in-house Legal Services team, providing specialist expertise across coronial law, inquests, and associated civil litigation.

You will provide expert legal advice, manage legal risk, support transparency and organisational learning, and ensure robust handling of sensitive proceedings.



Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage inquest and civil litigation cases from instruction through to conclusion.

  • Provide specialist legal advice to senior leaders on complex, sensitive, and high-risk matters.

  • Ensure compliance with coronial law, civil litigation procedures, and human rights obligations, including Article 2 considerations.

  • Manage disclosure processes, evidence preparation, and coordination of multi-agency legal responses.

  • Represent the organisation in legal proceedings and support counsel where required.

  • Advise on litigation strategy, risk mitigation, and settlement considerations.

  • Identify learning from legal outcomes and support improvements in organisational practice.

  • Work collaboratively with Legal Services, operational teams, and external stakeholders to ensure effective case management.

  • Support associated civil claims arising from inquests and related proceedings.



Essential Criteria

Applicants must demonstrate:

  • Qualification as a Solicitor, Barrister, or Chartered Legal Executive with a current practising certificate.

  • Significant experience managing inquests and civil litigation from instruction through to conclusion.

  • Strong knowledge of coronial law, civil litigation, legal procedure, and relevant human rights considerations.

  • Proven ability to advise senior stakeholders on complex and sensitive legal matters.

  • Excellent analytical skills, professional judgement, and the ability to manage high-risk cases.



Desirable Experience

Experience in the following areas would be advantageous:

  • Working within policing, the public sector, or another regulated environment.

  • Experience handling inquests and civil litigation involving public authorities.

  • Understanding of the operational and legal challenges associated with policing environments.
