Internal Auditor

An experienced Internal Auditor is required for a permanent position with a regional construction business based in Durham. The role will provide independent assurance across financial governance, risk management and internal controls, while identifying opportunities to improve efficiency and strengthen business processes.

A well-established regional construction business with a diverse range of operational and commercial activities across the Group.

The Role

The Internal Auditor will develop and deliver a risk-based internal audit programme, undertaking audits across financial, taxation, operational and compliance functions.

Key responsibilities will include maintaining the Group risk register, assessing internal controls and governance arrangements, identifying business risks and producing clear audit reports with practical recommendations. The role will also involve presenting findings to senior management, monitoring agreed actions and supporting continuous improvement.

Additional responsibilities include supporting fraud investigations where required, assisting with external audit activity, maintaining the HMRC correspondence log and providing assurance to the SAO Officer for annual SAO return sign-off.

Experience Required

• ACA, ACCA, CIMA or CIA qualified.
• Experience in internal audit, external audit, risk management or financial controls.
• Strong understanding of internal control frameworks and risk-based auditing.
• Excellent analytical, investigative and report-writing skills.
• Strong stakeholder management and communication abilities.
• Experience challenging constructively and influencing at all levels.
• Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
• Experience within construction, engineering, infrastructure or property services would be advantageous.
• Commercially aware, independent and able to exercise sound professional judgement.

Remuneration
