IT Field Engineer

JOB PURPOSE

We are seeking an experienced IT Field Engineer to deliver IT & Network installation projects across retail and commercial environments.

The role is highly hands-on and will involve conducting technical site surveys, completing pre-site documentation, installing and terminating structured cabling, testing systems, and ensuring projects are completed to a high standard and fully signed off by the client.

The successful candidate will be comfortable working in live retail environments, often outside normal trading hours, with overnight stays and travel required.

JOB RESPOSIBILITIES

IT & Cabling Installation

  • Install structured cabling systems across retail, commercial and office environments.
  • Install containment systems, including wire basket tray, underfloor steel conduit and associated containment.
  • Pull, route and terminate copper cabling, including Cat5e, Cat6 and Cat6a U/FTP.
  • Install and terminate fibre optic backbone systems, including OM4 and OS2, with fibre splicing where required.
  • Install outlets, patch panels, cabinets and associated network infrastructure.
  • Mount and patch network hardware and auxiliary equipment.
  • Ensure equipment is correctly positioned within cabinets, including appropriate weight distribution for heavy equipment such as UPS battery backups.
  • Follow approved cable schedules, colour-coding requirements and machine-labeling standards.

Testing, Commissioning & Quality

  • Test and certify installed cabling using Fluke DSX cable analysers.
  • Complete standards-based testing, including ISO/IEC 11801 PL2 Class Ea, where required.
  • Record test results, headroom and pass/fail information accurately.
  • Identify and rectify installation or testing failures.
  • Resolve operational snags and document corrective actions through the appropriate change-control process.
  • Ensure all installations comply with relevant industry standards, including:

    • TIA-568
    • ISO/IEC 11801
    • BS EN 50173
    • BS EN 50174

TECHNICAL EXPERIENCE

  • Demonstrable experience installing structured cabling within live retail, commercial or public-facing environments.
  • Strong practical experience pulling, routing and terminating Cat5e, Cat6 and Cat6a copper cabling.
  • Experience handling and terminating fibre optic cabling, including OM4 and OS2.
  • Experience with fibre splicing would be advantageous.
  • Proven experience using Fluke DSX or equivalent cable certification equipment.
  • Good understanding of structured cabling standards and installation practices.
  • Strong attention to detail when completing cable schedules, testing documentation and compliance records.
  • Ability to read technical drawings, layouts and cable schedules.
  • Good fault-finding and problem-solving skills.
  • Professional approach to working directly with clients, Store Managers and site teams.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

The successful candidate should hold, or have experience equivalent to some of the following:

  • IPAF – required for mobile elevated working platforms/scissor lifts.
  • PASMA – required for mobile access towers.
  • Asbestos Awareness – minimum UKATA-approved certification, including the ability to check site asbestos registers.
  • CNCI or equivalent – desirable.
  • City & Guilds 3668 or equivalent – desirable.
  • FIA, FOA or equivalent fibre qualification – desirable.
  • Relevant structured cabling, networking or fibre installation qualifications.

SALARY & BENEFITS

£150 - £160 per day (DOE)
