Location: Erith, Kent

Covering: London & Home Counties

Salary: £25,000 to £32,000, rising following successful completion of a 3-month probation

The Role

We are looking for a Junior Fire, Smoke & Electrical Engineer to join a growing Fire & Electrical department.

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with some electrical, fire alarm, AOV, smoke ventilation or building services experience who is looking to develop into a fully competent multi-skilled engineer.

You will work alongside experienced engineers across high-end residential developments, apartment blocks, commercial properties and managed estates, gaining hands-on experience with:

Fire alarm systems

Smoke ventilation and AOV systems

Emergency lighting

Basic electrical maintenance and fault finding

PPM and reactive maintenance

Testing, inspections and minor remedial works

Full training and support will be provided, with genuine opportunities to progress into a fully qualified Fire, AOV and Electrical Engineer.

Key Responsibilities

Fire Alarm Systems

Assist with planned preventative maintenance, servicing and testing of fire alarm systems.

Carry out routine inspections of fire alarm panels, detectors, sounders and associated equipment.

Assist with fault finding and investigation of reported issues.

Replace basic components where trained and competent to do so.

Record test results and identify defects requiring further investigation.

Assist senior engineers with remedial and installation works.

Ensure all works and findings are documented correctly.

Smoke Ventilation and AOV Systems

Assist with servicing and testing of Automatic Opening Vents and smoke ventilation systems.

Test smoke vents, actuators, control panels and associated equipment.

Assist with fault finding and investigation of system issues.

Check the operation of smoke control equipment and associated interfaces.

Identify defective components and report findings.

Assist with remedial works and replacement of components.

Develop technical knowledge of smoke ventilation systems within residential developments.

Basic Electrical Works

Carry out basic electrical maintenance and testing within your level of competence.

Assist with fault finding on electrical equipment associated with fire and smoke systems.

Work with control panels, power supplies, batteries, relays and associated wiring.

Assist with emergency lighting inspections and testing.

Carry out basic electrical checks and report defects.

Work alongside qualified electrical engineers on larger works.

PPM and Reactive Maintenance

Attend scheduled PPM visits across London and the Home Counties.

Respond to reactive faults where required.

Follow company PPM schedules and ensure all required checks are completed.

Complete engineer job sheets through the company's internal system.

Provide photographs, test results and clear descriptions of defects identified.

Highlight additional remedial works to senior engineers and the office team.

Working Within Residential Developments

A large part of the role will involve working within high-end residential developments and apartment blocks.

You will be expected to:

Deal professionally with residents, concierge teams and estate managers.

Work respectfully within occupied apartments and communal areas.

Maintain a clean and tidy working environment.

Protect residents' property and building finishes.

Follow site-specific access and permit procedures.

Communicate clearly when explaining issues or works required.

Training and Development

The successful candidate will receive ongoing training and support to develop their technical knowledge and qualifications.

Training may include:

Fire alarm servicing and testing

AOV and smoke ventilation systems

Emergency lighting

Basic electrical fault finding

Manufacturer-specific fire and smoke system training

Relevant industry qualifications

Electrical training and development

Health and safety and site-specific training

The successful candidate will initially work closely with senior engineers before gradually taking on more responsibility as their skills and qualifications develop.

Experience and Qualifications

Essential

Some experience within electrical, fire alarm, AOV, smoke ventilation or building services.

Basic understanding of electrical systems.

Good practical and mechanical/electrical ability.

Full UK driving licence.

Good communication skills.

Willingness to learn and develop.

Professional approach when working in occupied residential properties.

Desirable

Electrical qualification or formal electrical training.

Experience with fire alarm systems.

Experience with AOV or smoke ventilation systems.

Emergency lighting experience.

FIA training or equivalent.

BS 5839 awareness.

Experience working within residential developments or facilities management.

ECS card or similar industry accreditation.

The Person

We are looking for someone who is practical, reliable and keen to learn.

You do not need to be fully qualified across every discipline. The key requirement is that you have a good attitude, a basic understanding of electrical systems and the ability to learn from experienced engineers.
