This is a good role for someone who wants to build a proper career in mechanical estimating, not just sit in the background doing admin.

You will be joining an established air conditioning and mechanical services contractor, working across cooling, heating, ventilation, water services and plumbing projects. The business delivers design, installation, commissioning, servicing and maintenance, so you will get exposure to the full process rather than only seeing tenders on a screen.

The work will suit someone who is early in their estimating career, has come from an HVAC / mechanical engineering background, or is looking to move off the tools into a more technical office-based role.

You do not need to be the finished article. You do need to be organised, technically curious and comfortable learning how mechanical projects are measured, priced, queried, submitted and handed over to delivery teams.

What you’ll be doing

• You will support the estimating team with mechanical and HVAC tenders.
• You will help review drawings, specifications, schedules, site information and client requirements.
• You will assist with take-offs, supplier enquiries, subcontractor quotations, cost comparisons and tender returns.
• You will help price works across air conditioning, ventilation, heating, plumbing, water services, plant, controls interfaces and associated mechanical systems.
• You will speak with suppliers to gather technical information, lead times, costs and product options.
• You will help prepare budget estimates, schedules of quantities, detailed cost estimates and tender documentation.
• You will support site surveys where required, helping understand existing systems, access issues, plant locations and potential installation constraints.
• You will work closely with directors, project managers, engineers, CAD support and the service team to understand how projects are designed, priced, installed and maintained.
• You will help identify scope gaps, drawing issues, exclusions, risks and areas where clarification is needed before a price is submitted.
• You will assist with handover information once a project is secured, making sure the delivery team understands the tender allowance, scope and assumptions.

What you’ll need

• You could already be working as a Junior Mechanical Estimator, Trainee Estimator, Estimating Assistant, HVAC Estimator, Mechanical Coordinator, Project Administrator or Junior Mechanical Engineer.
• A background in air conditioning, ventilation, refrigeration, mechanical services, plumbing, pipework or building services would be useful.
• You may also be an AC engineer or mechanical engineer looking to move into estimating.
• You should be comfortable reading drawings or willing to learn quickly.
• You will need good attention to detail, solid communication skills and the confidence to ask questions when something does not look right.
• You should be comfortable using Excel and general Microsoft Office.
• Experience with AutoCAD, Bluebeam, Trimble, Ensign, ConQuest, Causeway or similar systems would be useful, but not essential at junior level.
• A mechanical trade background, HNC, HND, building services qualification, engineering qualification or HVAC apprenticeship would all be relevant.
• A full UK driving licence would be useful for site visits.
