How you’ll spend your day
As Lead Developer, you'll combine hands-on technical leadership with people management, helping shape the direction of a growing software engineering function. Working across both commercial SaaS products and large-scale public sector solutions, you'll lead Agile delivery teams, mentor developers and ensure high-quality software is delivered securely, efficiently and in line with business objectives.
You'll be responsible for:
- Leading and mentoring a team of software developers, providing technical guidance, coaching and day-to-day leadership.
- Driving the design and delivery of scalable, secure and high-performing software solutions across cloud-based platforms.
- Providing architectural direction and ensuring best practices are followed throughout the software development lifecycle.
- Remaining hands-on with development, code reviews and technical problem-solving while setting quality standards across the team.
- Working closely with Product Owners, Project Managers and business stakeholders to translate business requirements into practical technical solutions.
- Leading Agile delivery activities, including sprint planning, backlog refinement, stand-ups and retrospectives, ensuring successful delivery of each sprint.
- Supporting the adoption of modern engineering practices including CI/CD, DevOps, automation and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Identifying technical risks, resolving delivery challenges and ensuring projects remain on track.
- Championing secure software development, governance and compliance, particularly within regulated and public sector environments.
- Contributing to technology strategy, product roadmaps and continuous improvement across the wider engineering function.
What you’ll bring to this role
We're looking for an experienced technical leader who enjoys developing both software and people. You'll have a strong software engineering background, experience leading Agile development teams and the ability to communicate effectively with stakeholders across both technical and business functions.
You'll ideally have:
- Significant commercial software development experience, including several years in a Senior or Lead Developer position.
- Proven experience leading, mentoring and developing high-performing software engineering teams.
- Strong understanding of Agile and Scrum methodologies, with experience delivering complex software projects in iterative environments.
- Experience designing scalable software architectures and implementing modern development best practices.
- Commercial experience delivering SaaS applications, enterprise software or public sector technology solutions.
- Strong stakeholder management skills, with the ability to translate business requirements into technical solutions.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines, DevOps practices and modern software delivery tooling.
- Knowledge of secure software development principles and experience working within governed or regulated environments.
- Excellent communication, problem-solving and decision-making skills, with the ability to balance technical excellence with commercial delivery.
Technical experience should include:
- .NET / ASP.NET and modern C# development.
- Blazor and/or modern front-end frameworks such as React, Angular or Vue.
- API and backend service development.
- Microsoft Azure (or other cloud platforms such as AWS or GCP).
- Microservices and distributed application architecture.
- Docker and Kubernetes.
- Azure DevOps, GitHub, Jira or similar development tools.
- SQL Server and modern database design.
Desirable experience:
Delivering software within regulated or public sector environments.
Scrum Master or Agile certifications.
Experience supporting product strategy, technical roadmaps and long-term technology planning.
Working with distributed or cross-functional engineering teams.
Exposure to security accreditation, governance or compliance frameworks.
