Location: Middlemore Police HQ, Exeter
Contract Type: Temporary ongoing until at least June 2027
Hourly Rate: £26.41 per hour, working 37 hours per week Monday to Friday, Hybrid

Our client, a prominent organisation within the legal sector, is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Legal Advisor to join their dynamic team in Exeter. This is an exciting opportunity for a legal professional to provide comprehensive legal services to Chief Constables, officers, and staff, as well as to the Offices of the Police and Crime Commissioners (OPCC).

Key Responsibilities:

As a Legal Advisor, the successful candidate will:

  1. Offer tactical and strategic legal advice across a wide range of legal issues, including civil claims, Employment Tribunals, Inquests, and Judicial Review applications.
  2. Manage a diverse caseload, investigating and advising on contentious and non-contentious matters, while ensuring proactive legal support for police operations.
  3. Collaborate with police officers, staff, and partner agencies to obtain civil preventative orders, while working to mitigate strategic legal risks.
  4. Provide advocacy representation for the Chief Constable in various legal proceedings, ensuring thorough preparation and effective communication.
  5. Supervise and mentor paralegals and legal administrators, fostering a collaborative team environment.

Essential Qualifications and Skills:

To be considered for this role, candidates must possess:

  • An LLB (Hons) degree or equivalent qualification, with relevant professional qualifications as a Solicitor, Barrister, or Chartered Fellow of the Institute of Legal Executives.
  • Proven experience in handling contentious legal matters, with a comprehensive understanding of legal principles, legislation, and police law.
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to influence decision-making at all organisational levels.
  • Strong research and investigative skills, coupled with high attention to detail and the ability to manage a diverse caseload in a high-pressure environment.
  • IT literacy and familiarity with specialist databases and case management systems.
