We take pride in our products and Kaon’s success is a result of the skills and effort of our engineering team which is made up of signal processing, acoustic, software and systems engineers.  Due to our continued success, we are looking to expand our highly skilled engineering team.

We are seeking a Linux Configuration, Integration & Test (CIT) Engineer to support the development and delivery of Linux-based embedded systems.

Acting as a technical specialist who bridges the gap between software development, hardware/embedded platforms, and system deployment. You will configure, merge, and validate Linux-based operating systems, kernels, drivers, and application stacks to ensure everything works reliably on target hardware and pay meticulous attention to testing and validation.

Working as part of the engineering team, you will help deliver recording systems and advanced sonar solutions for deployment on Royal Navy ships and submarines.

At Kaon, you'll have the opportunity to work across the full product lifecycle, from proposals and customer engagement through to system design, implementation, testing, delivery and in-service support within the UK and overseas.

This role is ideal for someone with strong Linux expertise and an interest in hardware, looking to apply their skills across the development, production and testing of specialist embedded systems.

This role will include:

  • Responsibility for configuration, integration and testing of real-time systems and software components;
  • Installing optimising and testing Kaon bespoke software onto embedded Linux systems;
  • Working within the Kaon Linux DevOps environment to integrate optimal setting configurations;
  • Network configuration and optimisation and testing;
  • Linux device driver installation, optimisation and testing;
  • Linux kernel configuration, compilation, optimisation and testing;
  • Configuring operating systems for security and optimal network and resource performance;
  • Providing support and basic training to systems in the field;
  • Assembling and configuring systems utilising server grade hardware;
  • Undertaking testing, acceptance and accreditation processes on production systems;
  • Coordinating with software engineers to specify operating system requirements and create OS images;
  • Specifying hardware requirements and identifying suitable hardware components;

Please note that due to the nature of Kaon’s work this post is office-based and only open to UK Nationals who are willing and able to satisfy UK Government / MoD security vetting procedures.

In order to be successful in this role you must have:

  • At least 8 years of experience working with Linux systems;
  • In depth knowledge and familiarity with the Linux operating system and adept in its usage;
  • Linux shell script development;
  • Understanding of programming with C/C++;
  • Understanding of programming python;
  • Experience and interest in working with server grade hardware;

  • Understanding of Linux device drivers;
  • Understanding of Linux security and configuration;
  • Familiarity of the differences between Debian and Red Hat based distributions
  • Understanding of common networking protocols;
  • Appropriate higher or further education technical qualification in computer systems.

Any of the following additional skills would be advantageous: Network design; Managed switch configuration; Knowledge and experience of kernel compilation; Experience in High Performance Computing HPC or NUMA architectures; Familiarity with IP multicast; Linux and IP security settings and configuration; Network qualifications, e.g. CCNA; Understanding of hardware level aspects associated with controlling and writing/using Linux driver interfaces;
