This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in improving the appearance, cleanliness and environmental quality of neighbourhoods across Wolverhampton. As a highly visible member of the team, you will help deliver cleaner, greener and safer communities while engaging positively with residents, community groups, schools and local stakeholders.

About the Role

As a Love Your Community Neighbourhood Team Operative, you will undertake a variety of environmental maintenance, street cleansing and grounds maintenance duties across the city.

You will work as part of a dedicated operational team responsible for maintaining public spaces to a high standard while supporting local environmental improvement initiatives.

The role involves driving council vehicles, operating tools and equipment, interacting with members of the public and carrying out a range of physical outdoor duties in all weather conditions.



Key Responsibilities



Street Cleansing Duties

  • Litter picking within public spaces and neighbourhoods.
  • Emptying litter bins and disposing of waste appropriately.
  • Sweeping footways, precincts and public areas.
  • Removal of detritus and environmental waste.
  • Assisting with fly-tip clearance and environmental improvement works.
  • Reporting and assisting with graffiti removal where required.
  • Supporting deep cleansing operations.


Grounds Maintenance Duties

  • Grass cutting and verge maintenance.
  • Hedge trimming and shrub bed maintenance.
  • Weed control and edging activities.
  • Pruning and seasonal planting.
  • Leaf clearance and general horticultural work.
  • Maintaining parks, open spaces and public realm areas.


Driving and Vehicle Responsibilities

  • Driving council vehicles to operational locations.
  • Undertaking daily vehicle safety inspections and checks.
  • Ensuring vehicles remain roadworthy, clean and compliant.
  • Operating precinct sweepers and other vehicles where trained and authorised.
  • Reporting defects and completing vehicle documentation.


Health & Safety

  • Following all council health and safety procedures.
  • Carrying out safe manual handling activities.
  • Using tools, machinery and equipment safely and correctly.
  • Wearing and maintaining appropriate PPE at all times.
  • Ensuring compliance with operational and environmental regulations.


Community Engagement

  • Acting as a positive ambassador for City of Wolverhampton Council.
  • Interacting professionally with members of the public.
  • Supporting community clean-up events and environmental initiatives.
  • Working with councillors, volunteers, schools and community groups.
  • Promoting positive environmental behaviours and civic pride.


Essential Requirements

To be successful in this role, applicants must:

✅ Hold a full UK driving licence.
✅ Be willing to drive council vehicles as part of daily duties.
✅ Have experience working in an outdoor environment or operational service.
✅ Be able to undertake physically demanding tasks including manual handling.
✅ Demonstrate a strong awareness of health and safety practices.
✅ Be able to work effectively as part of a team and independently.
✅ Have good communication and customer service skills.
✅ Be reliable, flexible and committed to delivering high standards.
