Machining & Manufacturing Skills Instructor

Our client is currently looking for a Machining & Manufacturing Skills Instructor to join them on a permanent basis Working within the Machine Shop Department, you will deliver high-quality theoretical and practical instruction in machining and workshop engineering disciplines to military and civilian trainees. This role offers the opportunity to share your technical expertise, contribute to the development of future engineering talent, and support the modernisation of Royal Navy training through innovative and collaborative learning solutions.

Role: Machining & Manufacturing Skills Instructor
Location: Portsmouth
Hours: Full Time - Monday to Friday 09:00-17:30 -37.5 hours per week
Salary: £40,000 - £42,000

Due to the nature of this role, you must be eligible for UK Security Clearance at SC level.

Responsibilities:

  • Deliver theoretical and practical mechanical engineering training in fitting, turning, milling and grinding to military and civilian trainees in line with Defence and Foundation Degree standards.
  • Prepare, develop and maintain course materials, assessments and training documentation to ensure high-quality learning outcomes.
  • Assess trainee performance through tests, examinations and practical evaluations, providing feedback and support to promote successful completion.
  • Provide technical subject matter expertise and maintain training equipment and aids, liaising with external stakeholders and military units to support operational requirements.


Essential Skills/Experience/Qualifications

  • Candidates will have served a recognised apprenticeship or a relevant alternative period of training in Fitting and Turning processes to the appropriate ONC, City and Guilds (part III), BTEC or an equivalent level qualification, plus have recent experience within the appropriate workshop skills. Applicants who have completed a full Services Engineering Apprenticeship plus recent practical experience in that trade or specialisation will be deemed to meet the necessary requirements.
  • Candidates should have experience in all aspects of fitting, turning, milling and grinding as well as being to interpret engineering drawings in accordance with BS8888.
  • Candidates should have a minimum of five years post Apprenticeship experience in a relevant working environment


Desirable Skills/Experience/Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a training/instructional role would be beneficial but training in Defence instructional techniques will be provided for the successful applicant without prior experience.
  • Previous in Computer Aided Design would be beneficial


This role is offered on a term time basis working 45 weeks per year, with non-working weeks taken 2 weeks at Christmas and Easter and 3 weeks in August. The salary will therefore be pro rata'd and calculated to include contractual annual leave entitlement and bank holidays.
