Maintenance Engineer – Machine Tools

The Clay Partnership Ltd

The Opportunity

We are looking for an experienced 5-axis CNC Machine Tool Service Engineer to support the servicing, fault diagnosis and repair of complex and high quality CNC milling machines. This is a hands-on, customer-facing role suited to an engineer who enjoys taking ownership of technical problems and seeing them through to resolution.

The successful engineer will be based on the client's site five days per week and should be comfortable working independently, communicating with operators and engineering teams, and responding professionally to both planned maintenance and machine breakdowns.

Key Responsibilities

  • Service and repair 5-axis CNC milling machine tools.
  • Fault find, diagnose and correct machine errors and performance issues.
  • Carry out mechanical strip-down, inspection, repair, rebuild and set-up activities.
  • Assemble, set up and dismantle hydraulic, pneumatic and large mechanical assemblies.
  • Undertake preventative and reactive maintenance to maximise machine availability.
  • Work safely and methodically on complex, high-value machine tools.
  • Communicate clearly with the client, machine operators and engineering colleagues regarding faults, progress and corrective actions.
  • Manage day-to-day priorities independently and take ownership of assigned technical issues.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Strong hands-on experience with 5-axis CNC milling machines or closely related multi-axis machine tools.
  • Proven ability to fault find and diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic and machine-related issues.
  • Experience servicing, maintaining or repairing CNC machine tools in a production or service environment.
  • Siemens controls experience (840d would be a big plus)
  • Practical experience with hydraulic and pneumatic systems and large mechanical assemblies.
  • Ability to work independently, use initiative and make sound technical decisions.
  • Good communication skills and a professional approach when working on a customer site.
  • Self-motivated, reliable and comfortable being based at the client site five days per week.

Preferred Background

Ideally, you will be time-served or apprenticeship-trained in mechanical engineering, machine tools or a related discipline. We are particularly interested in engineers who have previously worked for a machine tool builder, distributor or specialist service organisation, or who have maintained complex CNC machinery within an engineering or manufacturing environment.

Why This Role?

  • The opportunity to work for a leader in the field of Machine Tools.
  • A technically varied role working with sophisticated 5-axis CNC machine tools.
  • A high level of ownership and autonomy in solving engineering problems.
  • A stable client-site environment with the opportunity to become a trusted technical point of contact.
  • An excellent fit for a service engineer who prefers hands-on engineering and practical problem solving.
