Materials Buyer

We are seeking an experienced and proactive Materials Buyer to join our growing construction team. This is an excellent opportunity for an organised and commercially aware individual to play a key role in supporting the successful delivery of refurbishment and construction projects across London and the South East.
Working closely with Project Managers, Quantity Surveyors and Site Managers, you will be responsible for procuring materials, plant and consumables, ensuring projects receive the right products at the right time, at the best possible value.
Key Responsibilities
- Source and procure construction materials, plant and equipment in line with project programmes.
- Obtain competitive quotations and negotiate the best prices, quality and delivery terms with suppliers.
- Raise and manage purchase orders in accordance with company procedures.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with suppliers and manufacturers.
- Monitor material lead times to ensure timely deliveries to site.
- Work closely with project teams to forecast material requirements and resolve supply issues.
- Track orders from placement through to delivery, ensuring accuracy and resolving any discrepancies.
- Review supplier performance, identifying opportunities for cost savings and improved service.
- Maintain accurate procurement records and supplier databases.
- Ensure purchased materials comply with project specifications, quality standards and relevant regulations.
- Support the commercial team by identifying value engineering opportunities where appropriate.
- Keep up to date with market trends, material availability and price fluctuations.
- Previous experience as a Materials Buyer within the construction industry.
- Knowledge of building materials used in refurbishment, restoration or general construction projects.
- Strong negotiation and supplier management skills.
- Excellent organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Good commercial awareness and attention to detail.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
- Experience using procurement or accounting software would be advantageous.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with internal teams and external suppliers.
- A proactive approach with excellent problem-solving abilities.
