Materials Information Coordinator
Special Steel Group · Direct employer
We are looking for a Materials Information Coordinator to join our team at Special Steels Ltd in Sheffield. Originally established in 1925, we are the UK's largest independent Nadcap-accredited heat treatment company, operating over 50 furnaces to process everything from engineering-grade materials to advanced superalloys. Complementing this is our full supply division, which specializes in low-alloy grades. We are looking to grow our vital technical team—the crucial link in aligning our extensive plant capabilities with our customers' precise expectations and high standards.
The Role
- Data Extraction: Review customer purchase orders to accurately extract and transfer critical production variables—including quantities, product forms, dimensions, material grades, and unique identifications—into our bespoke software system.
- Technical Process Configuration: Review customer purchase orders, technical documentation and historic data to calculate precise heat treatment parameters—including temperatures, cycle times, and quench media—and accurately program these into our bespoke software.
- Requirement Clarification & Communication: Proactively contact customers to resolve any ambiguities, missing data, or discrepancies in their purchase orders, ensuring all processing requirements are fully clarified before work begins.
- Commercial Order Validation: Conduct commercial reviews during the technical evaluation process to calculate accurate processing costs against standard price lists, delivering precise costings to customers for approval prior to thermal processing.
- Certification & Compliance Assurance: Review and cross-reference completed process data against entered technical requirements to generate accurate certificates of conformity and furnace charts, ensuring all processing fully meets specified standards prior to final product release.
- Quality & Audit Compliance: Maintain flawless digital and physical records of all technical evaluations, commercial agreements, and certification, ensuring complete traceability for internal tracking and external quality audits.
Job Security and Progression
- Stability: A permanent position within a resilient, well-established engineering and manufacturing group.
- Your Development: We provide full, step-by-step training to help you become confident in the role. We support your professional training to help you settle and grow with us over the coming years.
Our Systems
- Bespoke Software: We do not use generic systems. Instead, we utilise our own custom-built ERP software to manage every single stage of our products and processing cycles. This dedicated system tracks our order life cycles completely, managing everything from material receipt right through to final review and certification.
The Office Environment and Location
- Climate Control: Work from a fully air-conditioned, modern office space.
- Break Area: Space to unwind and relax during breaks with our staff pool table.
- Grounds: Access to landscaped garden areas and scenic canal walks right on the doorstep for fresh air.
- Commuting: Excellent links to public transport, alongside hassle-free on-site parking facilities and dedicated on-site bike facilities.
Candidate Profile
- IT Literacy: Confident learning, navigating, and mastering a dedicated, bespoke in-house business software package.
- Communication: Excellent written and spoken English with a professional, polite, and helpful manner.
- Motivated & Collaborative: A driven individual with a strong willingness to learn, who brings a positive, team-player attitude and a highly practical mindset to everyday tasks.
- Organised, Logical, and Detail-Oriented: Someone who brings a methodical, step-by-step mindset to problem-solving, combining a strong attention to detail with the diligence needed to manage your own tasks effectively and deliver high-quality, precise outputs.
- Compliance Focus: Strict adherence to safety standards, quality controls, and industry regulations.
Package and Benefits
- Salary: Negotiable, based on experience.
- Contract: Permanent, full-time office-based contract.
