Introduction

Acorn by Synergie is recruiting a Mechanical Design Engineer on behalf of a specialist British engineering and manufacturing business that designs, manufactures and installs advanced incubation and hatchery systems for customers across the world.

Their products combine sophisticated mechanical systems with electrical, controls and software technology and are used in demanding commercial environments internationally.

Due to continued growth, they are looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join their engineering team and play an important role in the design, development and continuous improvement of their product range.

This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer who wants to see their designs progress from concept → CAD → manufacture → installation → customer.

This is a 100% on-site position based in Sparkford, Somerset. There is no hybrid or remote working available.

The Role

Working as part of a multidisciplinary Engineering team, you will be involved in mechanical design activities from initial concept through to production, installation and customer use.

The role will involve both new product development and improvement of existing products, with a strong emphasis on practical, manufacturable and commercially viable engineering solutions.



Key Responsibilities

Mechanical Design & Development

  • Develop mechanical designs and assemblies for specialist industrial equipment.
  • Produce detailed 3D CAD models, assemblies and manufacturing drawings.
  • Design components and assemblies for manufacture, assembly, installation and service.
  • Develop design concepts in response to customer and engineering requirements.
  • Modify and improve existing products and designs.
  • Produce accurate Bills of Materials and engineering documentation.
  • Ensure designs meet required performance, quality and safety standards.
  • Participate in design reviews and technical problem-solving.

Design for Manufacture

  • Design for manufacture and assembly.
  • Consider materials, manufacturing processes and tolerances.
  • Identify opportunities to simplify components and assemblies.
  • Reduce unnecessary complexity and engineering variation.
  • Improve manufacturability and assembly efficiency.
  • Support the resolution of manufacturing and installation issues.

Product Improvement & R&D

  • Contribute to new product development.
  • Improve existing products.
  • Support cost reduction and value engineering.
  • Contribute to component standardisation.
  • Support reliability and maintainability improvements.
  • Investigate new materials, technologies and manufacturing methods.

Production & Technical Support

  • Investigate design and manufacturing problems.
  • Provide practical engineering solutions.
  • Support Production and Service teams.
  • Assist with installation and commissioning issues.
  • Liaise with suppliers regarding components and technical requirements.
  • Provide technical input into customer-specific solutions.


About You

We are looking for a practical, technically capable Mechanical Design Engineer who enjoys solving problems and wants to take ownership of their work.

This role is suitable for both experienced engineers who already have mechanical design experience within a manufacturing environment, and recent Engineering Graduates who are looking for their first opportunity to develop a career in mechanical design.

You will ideally have:

  • An engineering qualification or equivalent practical engineering experience.
  • Experience in mechanical design within a manufacturing environment, or a relevant engineering degree for graduate applicants.
  • Good knowledge of mechanical engineering principles.
  • Experience or strong academic knowledge of 3D CAD.
  • Experience producing, or an understanding of, engineering/manufacturing drawings.
  • An understanding of materials, manufacturing processes and tolerances.
  • Strong technical problem-solving ability.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Good communication and organisational skills.
  • A practical and hands-on approach to engineering.
  • A genuine interest in design, manufacturing and product improvement.


Desirable Experience

  • SolidWorks or equivalent 3D CAD systems.
  • Machinery or capital equipment.
  • Sheet metal fabrication.
  • Welded and fabricated structures.
  • Pneumatics or mechanical systems.
  • Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA).
  • Product development and R&D.
  • Engineering change and revision control.
  • Industrial automation or equipment.

Previous experience within poultry equipment or hatchery systems would be advantageous but is not essential.
