Are you an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer looking for an opportunity to work on complex, bespoke capital equipment projects from concept through to commissioning?
We're supporting a well-established engineering business that designs and manufactures heavy industrial equipment for customers across the UK and internationally. The RoleReporting to the Engineering Manager, you'll take responsibility for the mechanical design and development of bespoke machinery and engineered systems, leading projects from initial concept through detailed design, manufacture, testing, installation and commissioning.
You'll work closely with multidisciplinary teams, customers and suppliers to ensure designs are delivered on time, within specification and to the highest engineering standards.
Key Responsibilities- Lead the mechanical design of bespoke capital equipment and engineered systems from concept through to commissioning.
- Produce detailed 3D models, manufacturing drawings and GA drawings using SolidWorks and AutoCAD.
- Generate engineering calculations, technical specifications and Bills of Materials (BOMs).
- Ensure designs comply with UKCA/CE regulations and current machinery safety standards.
- Carry out design reviews, DFMEA activities and technical risk assessments.
- Support Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) and commissioning activities.
- Collaborate with manufacturing, procurement, project management, suppliers and customers throughout project delivery.
- Provide technical input during proposal and tender stages, supporting the development of innovative engineering solutions.
- Drive standardisation, continuous improvement and best practice across the engineering function.
We're looking for an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer who enjoys taking ownership of technically challenging projects and working within a fast-paced engineering environment.
You'll ideally have:
- A degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
- At least five years' experience designing heavy industrial machinery, fabricated equipment or hydraulic systems.
- Strong CAD skills using SolidWorks and AutoCAD.
- Experience delivering mechanical designs through the full project lifecycle.
- A sound understanding of machinery safety legislation, UKCA/CE compliance and engineering risk assessment.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to build strong relationships across engineering, manufacturing and customer teams.
It would also be advantageous if you have experience of:
- Aluminium processing, metals, recycling or other heavy industrial sectors.
- Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA).
- Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software such as Altair SimSolid.
- PLM systems and engineering change control.
- International project delivery.
- Chartered Engineer status, or you're actively working towards it.
