Mechanical Design Engineer
Southampton
6-Month Contract (Potential Extension)
£400 - £450 per Day

Are you a Mechanical Design Engineer looking for a contract opportunity where you can make a genuine impact across the full product development lifecycle?

My client is seeking a talented Mechanical Design Engineer to join their engineering team on an initial six-month contract. This is an opportunity to work on technically challenging projects within a highly collaborative environment, developing innovative mechanical and structural solutions from initial concept through to production and build support.

Working alongside a multidisciplinary team, you will play a key role in delivering robust, manufacturable designs while balancing technical performance, cost, production requirements, and programme schedules.

The Role As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will be responsible for delivering defined design packages across concept, detailed design, and production phases. You will create high-quality 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, and supporting technical documentation, ensuring designs meet engineering, manufacturing, and integration requirements.

This position would suit someone who enjoys taking ownership of their work, solving complex engineering challenges, and collaborating closely with a wide range of engineering disciplines.

Key Responsibilities
  • Produce detailed 3D CAD models, assemblies, and engineering drawings in line with company standards.
  • Develop practical and manufacturable design solutions that meet technical and operational requirements.
  • Deliver design activities from concept generation through detailed design and production support.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, design records, and engineering outputs.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, structural, and systems engineers to ensure integrated design solutions.
  • Provide production support, including resolving design queries and implementing engineering changes.
  • Participate in design reviews, risk assessments, and change control activities.
  • Manage assigned design tasks to ensure project milestones and delivery schedules are achieved.
  • Contribute to the ongoing improvement of engineering processes, tools, and best practices.
What We Are Looking For Essential Experience & Skills
  • Degree qualified in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Product Design Engineering, or a related discipline (BEng, MEng or equivalent).
  • Experience delivering designs from concept through to detailed design and production support.
  • Highly competent in both 2D and 3D CAD modelling.
  • Strong understanding of engineering drawings, tolerancing, and configuration control.
  • Knowledge of materials, manufacturing processes, and design-for-manufacture principles.
  • Experience working effectively within multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with a practical engineering mindset.
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills with the ability to manage priorities and deliver against project schedules.
Desirable Experience
  • Experience using Siemens NX and Teamcenter PLM.
  • Exposure to marine engineering environments and low-to-medium volume manufacturing.
  • Experience integrating mechanical systems such as hydraulics, propulsion equipment, or other complex engineering systems.
  • Understanding of structural design principles and interfaces with wider engineering disciplines.
  • Experience supporting production teams and resolving manufacturing or build-related issues.
  • Working towards, or holding, IEng or CEng status through a recognised professional institution such as IMechE, RINA, or IMarEST.
What's on Offer?
  • Competitive day rate of £400 - £450 per day.
  • Initial 6-month contract with strong potential for extension.
  • Opportunity to work on technically challenging engineering projects.
  • Collaborative and supportive engineering culture.
  • Exposure to the latest design, manufacturing, and engineering technologies.
  • Immediate project involvement within a growing engineering team.
If you are a Mechanical Design Engineer who enjoys taking designs from concept through to manufacture and thrives in a multidisciplinary environment, I would be keen to hear from you.
