The Opportunity
We are recruiting for an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join an innovative engineering business developing cutting-edge inspection and imaging technology used by leading organisations across the aerospace, automotive, semiconductor, energy and advanced manufacturing sectors.
This is an exciting opportunity to work within a collaborative R&D environment, taking concepts from design through to manufacture while working alongside scientists, engineers, manufacturing and supply chain teams to deliver precision-engineered products.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop mechanical components and sub-assemblies for new and existing products.
- Produce detailed 3D CAD models and engineering drawings using SolidWorks.
- Work closely with development teams to prototype and evaluate new design concepts.
- Perform engineering calculations to validate mechanical designs.
- Create and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs), drawings and engineering documentation.
- Support manufacturing by ensuring designs are suitable for production and assembly.
- Liaise with suppliers to source components and resolve technical queries.
- Drive continuous improvement of existing products and manufacturing processes.
- Ensure revision control and engineering documentation remain accurate and up to date.
Essential Requirements
- Minimum 5 years' experience in a Mechanical Design Engineering role.
- Strong proficiency with SolidWorks.
- Experience designing special purpose machinery, automation equipment or precision mechanical systems.
- Knowledge of automation mechanisms such as ball screws, linear motion systems or similar.
- Comfortable carrying out engineering calculations, including stress calculations.
- Experience with Design for Manufacture (DFM).
- Experience maintaining BOMs, engineering drawings and revision control.
- Minimum HNC/HND in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
Desirable Experience
- Precision engineering or scientific instrumentation.
- Optics or optical systems.
- PCB design or familiarity with KiCad.
- Cable routing, wiring design, energy chains or robotic cable management.
- Experience working within highly regulated or advanced technology environments.

You will be a detail-oriented engineer with excellent problem-solving skills who enjoys working across multidisciplinary teams. You'll be comfortable managing multiple projects simultaneously and communicating with colleagues across engineering, manufacturing and procurement to deliver high-quality engineering solutions.
