Key responsibilities will include:
- Leading the mechanical design management process from design development through to construction and handover.
- Managing external mechanical design consultants and specialist subcontractor design teams.
- Reviewing and coordinating mechanical designs, drawings, specifications and equipment schedules.
- Ensuring mechanical designs meet client requirements, technical specifications and project performance criteria.
- Managing the design development of cooling infrastructure, chilled water systems, ventilation, pipework and associated mechanical services.

- Identifying design gaps, technical risks and potential installation constraints.
- Managing design programmes, deliverables and information release schedules.
- Chairing mechanical design coordination meetings and monitoring consultant performance.
- Reviewing technical submissions, equipment selections and specialist design packages.
- Supporting procurement and value engineering exercises.
- Working with construction teams to ensure designs are practical, coordinated and suitable for installation.
- Managing design changes and ensuring accurate documentation and approvals.
- Supporting commissioning teams with technical information, system integration and final design documentation.
Experience Required
We are looking for an experienced Mechanical Design Manager with a strong background in building services engineering and the management of complex mechanical design packages.
The successful candidate will ideally demonstrate:
- Previous experience managing mechanical design on major data centre or mission-critical construction projects.
- A strong understanding of data centre cooling systems and associated mechanical infrastructure.
- Experience managing external consultants and specialist subcontractor design packages.
- Strong knowledge of mechanical building services design, coordination and technical compliance.
- Experience working for a major M&E contractor, engineering contractor or specialist design consultancy.
- The ability to manage design programmes and coordinate information across multiple disciplines.
- Experience reviewing mechanical plant selections, equipment specifications and technical submissions.
- A strong understanding of buildability, procurement and construction sequencing.
- Experience coordinating with electrical design teams, CSA contractors and commissioning specialists.
- Excellent technical communication, problem-solving and stakeholder management skills.
- A degree or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services Engineering would be advantageous.
The Ideal Candidate
This position would suit an experienced Mechanical Design Manager who understands the technical demands of major mission-critical projects and can effectively manage the design process within a fast-paced construction environment.
We are particularly interested in candidates who have worked closely with M&E contractors and understand the importance of delivering coordinated, construction-ready design information.
A background in data centre cooling infrastructure, complex mechanical plant installations and multidisciplinary design coordination would be highly relevant.
