Mechanical Design Engineer
UK | £48,000–£51,000 | Permanent | Engineering / Automation / Power Transmission
A global engineering organisation is seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to take ownership of complex design work spanning automation systems, power transmission equipment and bespoke engineered solutions.
This is more than a design role. You’ll be running multiple design phases at once, helping steer technical direction and actively mentoring colleagues through demanding projects. No direct line management is involved, but technical leadership and a team-first mindset are very much part of how this role works day to day.
The Role
• Technical Innovation — Driving new techniques, process improvements and better documentation across automation, power transmission and bespoke mechanical systems, staying ahead of emerging technologies and industry trends
• Project Ownership — Taking the lead on major project components or self-contained projects and delivering to technical, schedule and budget targets
• Complex Problem Solving — Tackling advanced engineering challenges with practical, real-world experience across automated machinery, mechanical systems and custom-built solutions
• Bid & Proposal Support — Bringing technical expertise to bids through risk assessment, concept development, cost estimation and early-stage planning
• Design Delivery — Owning the full design lifecycle from initial concept through to detailed delivery, covering modelling, calculations, design reviews, production drawings and BOM creation
• Engineering Calculations — Performing and checking calculations via hand methods, spreadsheets, FEA and specialist software
• Client & Site Interaction — Representing the business at client meetings, supporting site surveys, handling technical queries and contributing to installation, testing and commissioning
• Production Support — Helping production teams with technical queries, red-line updates, inspections and Factory Acceptance Testing
• Legacy Equipment Support — Delivering engineering support for existing and previously supplied systems
• Team Mentoring — Guiding colleagues, supporting their development and helping foster a positive, high-performing team culture
• Quality & Safety — Upholding safety standards, quality processes and engineering best practice across all work
• Stakeholder Engagement — Building trusted relationships with clients, suppliers, contractors and internal teams, always representing the organisation professionally
What We’re Looking For
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent experience
• Strong 3D CAD capability — AutoCAD or Inventor beneficial
• Proven experience with automated machinery, power transmission systems or bespoke mechanical equipment
• A genuine commitment to CPD and active engagement with industry bodies, seminars and technical events
• Deep understanding of advanced engineering principles, with the confidence to work independently and make well-informed decisions
• Strong communication, organisational and problem-solving skills
What’s on Offer
• £48,000–£51,000 salary
• Real ownership of engineering projects across automation and bespoke mechanical systems
• Genuine influence over design standards and technical direction within a global organisation
• A collaborative environment built around innovation and continuous improvement
• Exposure to a wide range of engineering challenges across multiple sectors
A permanent opportunity for an engineer who wants to do more than follow a brief — someone ready to lead from the front, raise the bar and leave a mark on the projects they touch.
