Mechanical Engineer

RTL Group Ltd

Mechanical Heating & HIU Engineer

Role Overview

We are seeking a skilled and motivated Mechanical Heating & HIU Engineer to join our engineering team, covering sites across Northwest, West, and South London. This role is ideal for an engineer with strong experience in commercial heating and Heat Interface Unit (HIU) systems.

You will play a key role in maintaining, repairing, and improving heating infrastructure across plant rooms and communal systems. The position offers a varied workload, including planned maintenance, reactive repairs, and upgrade projects, supported by a well-established engineering and management team. We are committed to developing our engineers through ongoing training, overtime opportunities, and clear progression pathways into Lead or Supervisory roles.

Working Pattern & Coverage

This is a field-based role requiring travel between multiple sites depending on operational priorities. Core working hours are 07:30 – 16:30 (with a 30-minute unpaid lunch break). Overtime is regularly available, including evenings and weekends. You will also participate in a 24-hour call-out rota, which is typically low volume and offers a standby allowance alongside enhanced call-out rates.

Key Responsibilities

The role involves carrying out planned preventative maintenance (PPM), servicing, fault finding, and reactive repairs on commercial heating, domestic hot water, and HIU systems. You will respond to breakdowns and service interruptions, restoring heating and hot water through effective diagnosis and repair.

You will maintain and service plant equipment such as pumps, valves, calorifiers, and plate heat exchangers, including cleaning, descaling, and component replacement. The role also includes undertaking mechanical installation and modification works, diagnosing leaks, and carrying out repairs across heating and pipework systems.

In addition, you will support refurbishment and upgrade projects, identify system performance issues, and recommend remedial or lifecycle improvements. Work will be carried out across residential, commercial, and healthcare sites, requiring a professional approach and strong customer service.

All work must be completed in line with health and safety regulations, RAMS, and permit-to-work systems. You will also be responsible for maintaining accurate service records and communicating effectively with clients, supervisors, and colleagues while working independently or as part of a team.

Skills, Knowledge & Experience

You will have proven experience working on Heat Interface Units (HIUs) and within commercial or communal heating environments, with strong knowledge of plant rooms and systems such as LTHW, MTHW, and domestic hot water.

A solid background in maintaining pumps, valves, calorifiers, and plate heat exchangers is essential, along with the ability to diagnose faults, carry out repairs, and complete mechanical installations. You should also have experience identifying and repairing heating and hot water leaks, alongside a strong understanding of health and safety practices.

Good communication and customer service skills are required, as well as a relevant qualification (NVQ Level 2/3 in Mechanical Engineering, Plumbing & Heating, or equivalent) and a full UK driving licence.

Desirable experience includes working on communal heating networks, steam systems, plant room refurbishments, and holding PSSR Competent or Authorised Person certification.

What We Offer

We provide ongoing training and development, regular overtime opportunities, a competitive call-out package, and clear career progression within a supportive and professional engineering environment.
