We're recruiting for a Mechanical Fitter to join a growing rail freight maintenance team in Rochester. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys practical work and wants to develop specialist engineering skills within the rail industry.
You'll benefit from a structured 12 month training programme, providing you with the skills, knowledge, and experience needed to become a fully competent Mechanical Fitter. As you progress through the programme, you'll receive salary increases at both the 6 month and 12 month milestones, recognising your development and growing skill set.
In addition to your basic salary, there is plenty of overtime available, paid at enhanced rates of 1.5x and 2x pay, giving you the opportunity to significantly increase your annual earnings.

As a Mechanical Fitter, you'll be responsible for repairing, maintaining, and refurbishing rail freight vehicles to the highest safety and quality standards.
This is a physically demanding, hands on role that will involve working underneath rail wagons, manual handling, loading and unloading equipment, and occasional work at height. You'll gain experience across a wide range of engineering activities including mechanical fitting, welding, grinding, fabrication, brake testing, fault finding, gauging, and general wagon maintenance.
Key Responsibilities- Repair, maintain, and refurbish railway freight vehicles and company assets
- Carry out rail vehicle inspections, fault finding, and modifications
- Complete damage repairs across a variety of freight wagons
- Support planned maintenance activities to ensure fleet availability
- Follow strict health and safety procedures at all times
- Work effectively as part of a skilled engineering team
We're looking for individuals who:
- Have a genuine interest in mechanics, engineering, or hands on work
- Are eager to learn and develop through a structured training programme
- Have a positive attitude and strong work ethic
- Can follow instructions and work safely in a busy workshop environment
- Want to build a long term career within engineering and rail
- Full UK Driving Licence
- Ability to pass a pre employment medical
- Ability to pass Drugs & Alcohol screening
- Ability to obtain a DBS check
- Comfortable working in a physically demanding environment
