Typically this person will:
Be an experienced Mechanical Fitter responsible for the installation, maintenance, repair, and refurbishment of mechanical equipment across wastewater treatment facilities and pumping stations. Working for a specialist mechanical and civil engineering contractor, they will support planned and reactive projects, ensuring all work is completed safely, efficiently, and to the highest quality standards.
Key Responsibilities of the Mechanical Fitter:
  • Install, maintain, repair, and replace mechanical equipment within wastewater treatment plants and pumping stations.
  • Carry out the installation and alignment of pumps, gearboxes, valves, pipework, conveyors, screens, mixers, and associated mechanical equipment.
  • Diagnose mechanical faults and complete repairs to minimise operational downtime.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, technical specifications, and site plans.
  • Work alongside civil engineering teams to support mechanical installation activities on new and existing infrastructure projects.
  • Carry out preventative and reactive maintenance in accordance with planned maintenance schedules.
  • Complete site inspections and identify opportunities for equipment improvements or maintenance.
  • Ensure all work is carried out in accordance with health, safety, and environmental regulations.
  • Complete job reports and maintenance documentation accurately.
  • Liaise with site supervisors, project managers, and client representatives to ensure projects are delivered on time and within specification.
  • Support commissioning and testing of newly installed mechanical equipment where required.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organised working environment at all times.
Essential Skills & Qualifications:
  • Proven experience as a Mechanical Fitter within the water, wastewater, utilities, process, or heavy industrial sectors.
  • Strong knowledge of pumps, valves, pipework, gearboxes, rotating equipment, and mechanical assemblies.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and technical documentation.
  • Experience carrying out maintenance, fault finding, and mechanical installations.
  • Good understanding of Health & Safety legislation and safe systems of work.
  • CSCS Card (or willingness to obtain).
  • Full UK Driving Licence.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and excellent attention to detail.
Desirable Experience:
  • NVQ Level 3 or City & Guilds qualification in Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Fitting.
  • Experience working on clean water or wastewater treatment sites.
  • EUSR Water Hygiene Card.
  • Confined Space Entry certification.
  • IPAF and/or PASMA certification.
  • Lifting and Slinging or Appointed Person awareness.
  • Experience supporting mechanical commissioning activities.
