Mechanical Fitter
Wakefield | £17.20 per hour | Temp to Perm | Days
A well-established precision engineering business in Wakefield is looking for a skilled Mechanical Fitter to join its team on an initial 12-week temporary contract — with genuine potential to go further.
The work is hands-on and varied — building and assembling bespoke, low-volume machinery in a close-knit workshop, with the occasional trip out to customer sites for installations. After 12 weeks, there are three possible outcomes: a permanent role, a rolling contract, or a clean parting of ways if it’s not the right fit. No ambiguity, no grey areas.
If you know your way around a drawing, take pride in a well-built machine, and want to prove yourself with a reputable engineering business, this is a strong opportunity.
The Role:
• Building and assembling special purpose machinery from engineering drawings
• Installing equipment at customer premises when required
• Using hand tools, lifting equipment and workshop machinery
• Carrying out risk assessments and working to HSE safe working practices
• Liaising with customer technical teams during installation phases
• Contributing ideas to improve build methods and assembly processes
What We’re Looking For:
• HNC in Mechanical Engineering or solid equivalent hands-on experience
• Proven background in mechanical assembly or machinery build
• Confident reading and working from detailed engineering drawings
• Sound understanding of machine safety and safe systems of work
• Comfortable in customer-facing environments when out on site
• Willing to travel occasionally for installation work
• Experience with basic electrical or pneumatic systems is a bonus — not a dealbreaker
What’s on Offer:
• £17.20 per hour
• 12-week temporary contract to start
• Three clear outcomes at 12 weeks: permanent role, rolling contract, or contract end
• Day shifts: Mon–Thu 08:00–16:30 / Fri 08:00–15:15
• Bonus scheme and company pension if taken on permanently
• Ongoing training and development
A genuine chance to get into a respected precision engineering business, working on interesting one-off machinery — with a clear and honest route to something longer-term for the right person.
