The Opportunity

An established building services and maintenance business is looking for a Mechanical Project Manager to join its Peterborough team, with a strong focus on commercial plumbing and heating maintenance.

This is a great opportunity for an experienced Senior Mechanical Supervisor, Contracts Supervisor, Mechanical Engineer or similar who is ready to take the next step into a project/contract management position.

The role is approximately 70% office-based and 30% client/site-based, giving you responsibility for coordinating engineering resources, planning works, dealing directly with clients and attending sites across the Cambridgeshire region.

You will oversee a team of up to eight engineers, coordinating approximately 50–60 planned maintenance jobs throughout the year. The workload is predominantly planned preventative maintenance, with a smaller reactive maintenance element.

This is a hands-on management role where your technical knowledge of commercial heating and plumbing will be important.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and manage a team of up to eight mechanical/plumbing and heating engineers.
  • Plan and oversee approximately 50–60 planned maintenance and project works throughout the year.
  • Manage predominantly planned preventative maintenance (PPM), alongside reactive maintenance requirements.
  • Allocate engineers to jobs and ensure works are completed efficiently and within agreed timescales.
  • Coordinate workloads, materials, access requirements and client expectations.
  • Act as a key point of contact for clients across the Cambridgeshire region.
  • Attend client sites to carry out surveys, inspect works, discuss requirements and provide technical support.
  • Review and prepare quotations, variations and estimates where required.
  • Monitor the progress, quality and commercial performance of works.
  • Manage subcontractors where required and ensure works are completed safely and to specification.
  • Ensure all works comply with relevant health & safety legislation, company procedures and industry standards.
  • Produce and review RAMS, reports, quotations and other project documentation.
  • Identify additional works and opportunities while attending client sites.
  • Support engineers with technical queries and provide practical guidance when required.
  • Maintain accurate records of planned and reactive works using the company's CAFM/job management systems.
  • Take ownership of customer issues and ensure they are followed through to completion.
  • Support the ongoing development, training and performance of the engineering team.
Essential Experience

  • Strong background in commercial plumbing and heating.
  • Experience within mechanical building services, facilities management, maintenance or service environments.
  • Previous responsibility for supervising or coordinating engineers.
  • Experience managing planned preventative maintenance and/or reactive maintenance.
  • Good understanding of commercial heating, plumbing and associated mechanical systems.
  • Confident dealing directly with clients and site representatives.
  • Able to organise multiple jobs and engineering resources effectively.
  • Good understanding of RAMS, safe systems of work and construction/maintenance health & safety requirements.
  • Commercial awareness, including quotations, variations and basic budget control.
  • Comfortable using job management/CAFM software.
  • Full UK driving licence.
Desirable

  • NVQ Level 3 in Plumbing & Heating or a relevant mechanical qualification.
  • SSSTS/SMSTS.
  • Gas Safe, ACS, OFTEC or other relevant industry qualifications.
  • Experience working to SFG20 planned maintenance standards.
  • Previous experience working across manufacturing, commercial, education or industrial environments.
  • Experience managing a 24/7 or emergency callout function.
  • The business currently uses Service Life for job and maintenance management, with a planned move to Joblogic.
