Mechanical Project Manager

James Lewis Recruitment

Mechanical Project Manager

West London | HS2 / Major Infrastructure | Permanent

If you’re a Mechanical Project Manager who wants to work on major infrastructure rather than another standard commercial M&E project, this is the sort of role that gives you proper technical exposure.

You’ll be joining a major HS2 project in West London, working for an established M&E contractor delivering complex mechanical packages across a high-pressure rail infrastructure environment.

This is not a role for someone who just reports progress and waits for others to solve problems. The project needs someone who can take ownership, manage the site team, coordinate subcontractors, control programme and make sure mechanical works are delivered safely, properly and to the required standard.

The role

You’ll take responsibility for mechanical project delivery across a major infrastructure scheme, managing the package from technical coordination and pre-construction support through to installation, commissioning and handover.

The work is expected to involve plantroom infrastructure, ventilation, pipework, pumps, public health systems, drainage, mechanical services distribution, temporary works coordination, BMS interfaces, testing, commissioning and handover documentation.

You’ll be working closely with the project director, construction teams, design teams, commercial staff, supervisors, subcontractors, specialist vendors and client-side teams to keep the mechanical package moving.

This is a busy, technically detailed environment, so the role needs someone who can manage both the paperwork and the reality of what is happening on site.

What you’ll be doing

Managing mechanical delivery across a major HS2 infrastructure project in West London.

Taking responsibility for programme, procurement, labour, subcontractors, technical coordination, QA and handover.

Coordinating mechanical installation works across plantrooms, ventilation, pipework, public health, drainage and associated building services.

Working with design, engineering and construction teams to resolve technical issues before they affect progress.

Managing subcontractors, supervisors and specialist suppliers across a busy construction environment.

Reviewing drawings, technical submissions, RFIs, RAMS, inspection records, commissioning plans and handover documentation.

Keeping control of progress, short-term planning, reporting, risk, cost, change and project close-out.

Supporting testing, commissioning, snagging, O&M production and final handover.

Maintaining high standards around health and safety, quality, coordination and site discipline.

What you’ll need

You’ll need strong mechanical project management experience within M&E contracting, infrastructure, rail, major commercial projects, stations, healthcare, airports, data centres or technically demanding building services environments.

Rail or infrastructure experience would be a strong advantage, especially if you have worked around controlled access, permits, logistics, staged works, client procedures and strict programme requirements.

You should be confident managing subcontractors, supervisors, technical teams and specialist suppliers on high-pressure projects.

You’ll need to understand programme, procurement, QA, commissioning, client reporting, variations, risk and handover.

A strong mechanical background is essential. HNC/HND, degree, trade background or equivalent building services experience will all be considered if you have delivered at the right level.

The right person

You’re organised, practical and technically credible.

You can deal with the client, push subcontractors, challenge design issues, support the site team and keep the programme moving without letting quality slip.

You understand that infrastructure work is different from standard building services. Access is tighter, coordination is heavier and poor planning causes problems quickly.

You’ll suit this role if you’ve already delivered mechanical packages on demanding projects and want a permanent position on one of the UK’s most significant infrastructure schemes.
