Looking for a stable, hands-on maintenance role with great benefits? Think FE is recruiting a Mechanical Maintenance Technician to join the Estates and Facilities team at a well-established college in North Yorkshire.
This is a great opportunity for someone with a background in mechanical maintenance, building services, facilities or engineering who enjoys practical work and solving problems.
You'll help keep the college's buildings, equipment and mechanical systems running safely and efficiently. The role offers plenty of variety, from maintaining heating and ventilation systems to carrying out repairs and preventative maintenance across the college estate.
You don't need to have worked in education before. We're keen to hear from maintenance technicians and engineers from commercial, industrial or facilities backgrounds who are looking for a secure, permanent position.
What you'll be doing
  • Carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) and respond to day-to-day maintenance requests.
  • Support the servicing, maintenance and repair of mechanical building services.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot heating, cooling and ventilation systems.
  • Conduct routine inspections, identify faults and carry out repairs.
  • Assist with the maintenance and monitoring of water systems and associated equipment.
  • Support repairs and replacements of mechanical components, including thermostatic mixing valves (TMVs).
  • Work alongside experienced colleagues and external contractors when required.
  • Ensure tools, equipment and work areas are maintained safely.
  • Follow health and safety procedures and help maintain a safe environment for students, staff and visitors.
  • Respond to occasional emergency maintenance issues or out-of-hours requirements.
What we're looking for Essential:
  • Previous experience in mechanical maintenance, facilities management, building services or an engineering environment.
  • Practical experience using tools and maintenance equipment safely.
  • The ability to identify faults and carry out basic mechanical repairs.
  • A good understanding of workplace health and safety.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a practical approach to maintenance work.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • A reliable, organised and proactive approach to work.
Desirable:
  • Experience with planned preventative maintenance (PPM) programmes.
  • Knowledge of HVAC, heating, cooling and ventilation systems.
  • Experience maintaining water systems, water quality or thermostatic mixing valves (TMVs).
  • Previous maintenance experience in commercial, industrial or educational buildings.
  • Knowledge of renewable technologies such as air source heat pumps or solar thermal systems.
  • Experience using maintenance management systems.
  • Understanding of permits to work, hot work procedures and confined space safety.
  • Experience working at height or using access equipment.
What's on offer?
  • Salary of £26,000–£31,500, depending on experience.
  • 38 days' annual leave, including bank holidays.
  • Permanent, full-time employment.
  • Regular weekday hours, Monday to Friday, 8:00am–4:30pm.
  • A varied role working across mechanical maintenance and building services.
  • Opportunities to develop your technical knowledge and experience.
  • A stable working environment within an established education setting.
Interested? Whether you're currently working as a Mechanical Maintenance Technician, Facilities Technician, Building Services Engineer or Maintenance Operative, we'd like to hear from you.
If you have practical maintenance experience, enjoy fault finding and want a permanent position with excellent annual leave, this could be a great opportunity.
