Supply Star Recruitment are recruiting on behalf of a provision in Coventry who require a Mechanics Learning Mentor to join their team.

You will initially be required to work through Supply Star Recruitment on a probationary period. Upon successful completion of this period, you will be offered a permanent contract.

The school specifically supports learners with Mental Health Needs and would ideally like to appoint someone with knowledge and understanding of Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support students during practical mechanics sessions, helping them to develop their skills and confidence in areas such as vehicle maintenance, engine systems, diagnostics, hydraulics and safe working practices.
  • Work alongside the Mechanics Instructor to provide individual and small-group support to learners.
  • Build positive relationships with students, encouraging engagement, motivation and independence.
  • Act as a positive role model, supporting students with their personal development as well as their vocational learning.
  • Prepare workshop materials, tools and equipment for practical sessions.
  • Ensure workshop equipment is maintained, organised and used safely in accordance with health and safety procedures.
  • Monitor student engagement and progress, providing feedback to the teaching team.
  • Support students with SEMH needs, helping them to overcome barriers to learning and achieve positive outcomes.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers and other professionals to create a safe, inclusive and supportive learning environment.

Requirements:

  • A Level 2 or Level 3 qualification in Mechanics, Automotive Engineering or a related field.
  • Industry experience in mechanics, vehicle maintenance or automotive technology.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • A patient, supportive and encouraging approach to working with young people.
  • An understanding of, or willingness to learn about, supporting students with SEMH needs.

Desirable:

  • Previous experience working in education, training, youth work or a mentoring role.
  • Experience supporting young people with additional needs or challenging behaviour.
  • Familiarity with vocational qualifications such as BTEC or City & Guilds.
  • Health & Safety certification (e.g. COSHH, First Aid).
