Reporting to the Engineering Manager, this role plays a key part in maintaining production efficiency within a fast-paced poultry processing and packaging operation. The successful candidate will be responsible for responding swiftly to breakdowns, delivering planned preventative maintenance, and supporting continuous improvement projects across the site, with a particular focus on mechanical maintenance and reliability.
The position involves working on a wide range of processing and packaging equipment including conveyors, module and tray transport systems, plucking equipment, evisceration machinery, tray sealers, flow wrappers and vacuum sealing machinery. This is a hands-on role requiring strong mechanical fault-finding and repair skills, combined with a good understanding of electrical systems to support efficient fault diagnosis and minimise downtime.
Responsibilities include carrying out preventative and corrective maintenance, replacing and repairing mechanical components, bearings, chains, gearboxes, motors, pumps and conveyor systems, as well as supporting production teams during breakdown situations. The role will also involve undertaking machinery modifications, installation work and small engineering projects. Basic PLC fault finding and electrical troubleshooting skills are desirable to assist with identifying root causes of equipment failures.
Health and safety is a critical aspect of the position. You will be expected to work to the highest standards, following permit-to-work procedures, risk assessments, method statements, lock-off procedures and all site safe systems of work.
To be considered, you should hold an NVQ Level 3 qualification in Engineering along with a recognised engineering apprenticeship. A strong mechanical background within a manufacturing, food processing, packaging or production environment is essential. Candidates should be confident reading and interpreting engineering drawings, carrying out mechanical repairs and maintenance, and using workshop equipment safely and effectively. Welding experience (MIG, TIG and ARC) would be highly advantageous.
Candidates with experience of PLC fault finding, CMMS systems, ONC/HNC qualifications or 17th Edition electrical certification will be at an advantage, although the primary focus of the role is mechanical maintenance and equipment reliability.
The ideal candidate will be capable of working effectively under pressure, prioritising workloads, communicating well across departments, and demonstrating a proactive, flexible approach. You should be self-motivated, organised and committed to delivering high standards of engineering support within a demanding manufacturing environment.
In return, the role offers a salary of £50,000, a stable shift pattern, and the opportunity to join a successful business where engineering plays a vital role in maintaining production performance and continuous improvement.
