New Product Development Engineer
Manchester | Up to £45,000 depending on experience
Full-time, permanent | Hybrid working where tasks allow
Enjoy designing, building and testing physical products and seeing them used in the real world?
Our client is looking for a hands-on New Product Development Engineer to develop security products that operate in demanding outdoor environments. Think solar and battery power, cellular connectivity and systems that need to work reliably without mains electricity or a fixed network.
You’ll take products from initial concept through prototyping, testing and deployment, with ownership of your work and scope to influence engineering decisions.
What you’ll be doing
Working with the Product Innovation Director, you’ll:
-
Design and develop products across electronics, mechanical assemblies and embedded software.
-
Create 3D CAD models and engineering drawings, using in-house 3D printing to build and refine prototypes.
-
Evaluate electronic components, battery and solar power systems, and cellular connectivity.
-
Write and adapt code for development, automation and testing, particularly using Python.
-
Plan and carry out functional, environmental and reliability testing, including trials on live customer sites.
-
Work with suppliers and manufacturers to source components and take designs into production.
-
Support AI and video analytics integration, product certification and handover to installation and service teams.
What you’ll bring
You’ll have around two years or more of practical product development, design or test engineering experience, or an exceptional portfolio of hands-on technical work.
You’ll also need:
-
Practical 3D CAD experience using Fusion 360, Shapr3D, SolidWorks, AutoCAD or similar.
-
An understanding of electronics, DC power, batteries and solar systems, with the ability to read schematics and use test equipment.
-
Programming ability in at least one language, ideally Python.
-
Working knowledge of TCP/IP, routing, firewalls and VPNs.
-
Confidence building, wiring, assembling and fault-finding physical products.
-
The ability to solve technical problems independently and communicate clearly with suppliers, colleagues and customers.
Experience with off-grid products, IoT, cellular connectivity, embedded systems, CCTV, video analytics or product compliance would be useful.
A relevant degree, HND or HNC is preferred, but equivalent practical experience is welcome.
What’s on offer
-
Salary up to £45,000, depending on experience.
-
Ownership of products from concept to deployment.
-
Access to 3D printing, electronics and test facilities.
-
Opportunities to work with AI, IoT and low-power connectivity.
-
A development path towards senior product engineering or product management.
-
The support of an established security business expanding into international markets.
Location and travel
You’ll be based in Manchester, with home working available where suitable. Much of the role involves practical development and site work.
Expect a few days of UK travel per month for trials and supplier visits, plus occasional international travel. A full UK driving licence and a valid passport, or the ability to obtain one, are required.
Apply
Examples of your work are welcome, including CAD models, prototypes, personal projects, code repositories or product photographs.
Our client is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees.
