Job Summary
We are looking for an experienced Band 8a Sonographer to join our ultrasound service across Stoke Mandeville Hospital and Wycombe Hospital on a temporary basis until June 2027.
The successful candidate will have extensive experience in general medical, obstetric and gynaecological ultrasound, including trans-vaginal scanning, and be confident working autonomously in a busy clinical environment.
Main Duties
- Perform, interpret and report general abdominal, small parts, obstetric and gynaecological ultrasound examinations.
- Undertake trans-vaginal and a wide range of non-obstetric ultrasound examinations.
- Perform examinations in ITU, NICU, theatres and trauma settings, including sedated or anaesthetised patients.
- Provide specialist ultrasound advice and image interpretation to clinicians and healthcare professionals.
- Support one-stop clinics and specialist clinical pathways.
- Recognise significant findings and make appropriate urgent referrals for further treatment or imaging.
- Provide sensitive counselling and support to patients, including those receiving distressing news.
- Assist with biopsies and other sterile procedures, including patient monitoring.
- Undertake mobile ultrasound examinations where required.
- Maintain high standards of patient safety, infection control and equipment quality assurance.
- Support the development of ultrasound protocols, techniques and service improvements.
- Assist with equipment evaluation, maintenance and quality assurance.
- Provide teaching, training and supervision to students, radiographers, sonographers and clinical support staff.
- Participate in audit, research, clinical governance and multidisciplinary meetings.
- Maintain accurate patient records and use relevant imaging and reporting systems, including PACS and RIS.
- Maintain own CPD and complete mandatory and statutory training.
- Communicate effectively with patients, carers and multidisciplinary teams.
- Assist with monitoring waiting times and achieving service targets.
- Support service development and deputise for the Ultrasound Service Manager when required.
- Work autonomously while maintaining high professional, clinical and reporting standards.
Essential Requirements
- BSc in Radiography or equivalent healthcare qualification to degree level.
- PGD in Ultrasound Imaging or equivalent qualification with relevant ultrasound experience.
- MSc in Ultrasound or equivalent extensive experience in general medical and obstetric ultrasound.
- Current HCPC or RCT registration.
- Extensive experience in obstetric, gynaecological and general medical ultrasound.
- Wide range of non-obstetric scanning experience.
- Evidence of CPD and recent DQASS monitoring.
- Excellent knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathology and cross-sectional anatomy.
- Ability to work autonomously and produce accurate clinical reports.
- Experience in teaching, training, counselling and communicating sensitive information.
