Lead Waste Engineering on One of the UK's Most Innovative Decommissioning Programmes

We're looking for an experienced Waste Engineer or Package Manager to play a pivotal role in the JET Decommissioning and Repurposing (JDR) Programme.
This is an exciting opportunity to lead waste engineering activities across complex nuclear decommissioning packages, helping to safely decommission facilities, plant systems and major components while ensuring full compliance with environmental and regulatory requirements.
If you have a background in radioactive waste management, waste characterisation or nuclear decommissioning and want to work on a nationally significant programme, we'd love to hear from you.

The Role

As Package Manager - Waste Engineering, you'll take ownership of waste engineering activities throughout the project lifecycle, developing waste management strategies, coordinating multidisciplinary teams and ensuring waste is safely characterised, processed and routed for disposal.
Working closely with engineers, project managers, Health Physics, environmental specialists and waste service providers, you'll provide the technical leadership needed to deliver safe, compliant and efficient decommissioning projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead waste engineering activities across assigned decommissioning work packages.
  • Develop and implement waste management and waste disposition strategies.
  • Plan and coordinate waste characterisation campaigns.
  • Produce Data Quality Objectives (DQOs), Waste Sampling & Analysis Plans (WSAPs) and technical documentation.
  • Develop waste inventories, forecasts and disposal route assessments.
  • Coordinate laboratories, contractors and specialist waste service providers.
  • Support waste processing, packaging, transport and disposal activities.
  • Ensure compliance with CDM Regulations, IRR17, Environmental Permitting Regulations, ALARP principles and Waste Acceptance Criteria.
  • Identify technical risks and develop practical mitigation strategies.
  • Mentor and support junior engineers and technical staff.
  • Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary project teams throughout project delivery.

What We're Looking For

You'll ideally have:

  • Experience delivering waste engineering or radioactive waste management activities within the nuclear sector.
  • Strong understanding of waste characterisation, DQOs, WSAPs and waste route development.
  • Knowledge of radioactive waste legislation, Environmental Permitting Regulations (EPR), Waste Acceptance Criteria (WAC) and Best Available Techniques (BAT).
  • Experience supporting decommissioning, deplanting, facility clean-out or hazardous waste projects.
  • Experience coordinating multidisciplinary engineering teams and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent technical reporting and communication skills.
  • Degree qualified in Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Science or a related discipline.
  • Chartered status or equivalent experience is desirable.

Why Join?

  • Be part of a flagship UK nuclear and fusion decommissioning programme.
  • Long-term 12-month contract with strong extension potential.
  • Hybrid working with 3 days per week on site at Culham.
  • Competitive £55-£60 per hour Inside IR35.
  • Work alongside leading experts in waste engineering, decommissioning and nuclear technology.
  • Opportunity to influence innovative waste management strategies on technically challenging projects.

If you're a Waste Engineer, Senior Waste Engineer, Radioactive Waste Specialist, Decommissioning Engineer or Package Manager looking for your next challenge in a highly regulated environment, we'd love to hear from you.
