Painter & Decorator (Modern & Heritage Buildings)

Salary: £33,539 per annum
Location: Cambridge
Contract: Permanent
Hours: 39 hours per week (Monday–Thursday 8:00am–5:00pm, Friday 8:00am–4:00pm)

We are looking for a skilled Painter & Decorator to join a Works team, carrying out high-quality decorating work across a diverse estate of modern, historic and listed buildings. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced professional who takes pride in delivering exceptional workmanship while helping to preserve buildings dating from the 15th century through to the present day.

Working on a varied range of projects, you'll undertake both routine maintenance and specialist conservation work, using traditional and modern decorating techniques to achieve the highest standards.

Key Responsibilities

As Painter & Decorator, you will:

  • Prepare a wide range of surfaces, including sanding, filling, cleaning and priming.
  • Apply a variety of finishes including emulsions, gloss, varnishes and specialist coatings.
  • Carry out high-quality internal and external painting and decorating.
  • Install wallpaper, specialist wall coverings and decorative finishes.
  • Undertake sensitive restoration and redecoration of heritage and listed buildings.
  • Use traditional materials such as lime-based paints and distemper where appropriate.
  • Follow conservation specifications to protect and preserve historic features.
  • Work carefully around architectural details including cornices, mouldings, sash windows and timber panelling.
  • Carry out decorating works within modern buildings and refurbishment projects using contemporary materials and spray techniques.
  • Comply with all health and safety legislation, including COSHH and Working at Height Regulations.
  • Maintain a safe, clean and organised working environment.
  • Liaise professionally with colleagues, contractors and other trades.
  • Maintain tools and equipment, complete accurate work records, and carry out small glazing repairs where required (training provided).
  • Support apprentices or junior team members when appropriate.

About You

You will have:

  • Proven painting and decorating experience across both modern and older buildings.
  • Experience preparing a variety of surfaces including plaster, wood, masonry and metal.
  • Knowledge of a wide range of paints, finishes and decorating techniques.
  • An understanding of heritage materials and conservation principles.
  • Experience of wallpapering and decorative finishes.
  • The ability to interpret job specifications and drawings.
  • Excellent attention to detail and pride in producing high-quality work.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Good organisational skills with a reliable and flexible approach.

Qualifications

NVQ Level 2 (or equivalent, such as City & Guilds) in Painting & Decorating, or significant relevant experience.

Evidence of health and safety training and safe working practices.

Desirable

Experience working on listed buildings or conservation projects.

Knowledge of traditional decorating techniques such as limewash, gilding, graining or marbling.

Experience with paint spraying.

Experience carrying out small glazing repairs.

PASMA, IPAF or Working at Height certification.

First Aid at Work qualification.

Additional Information

A full UK driving licence is desirable, as there may be occasional use of a works vehicle.

The estate covers approximately 36 acres, and many buildings include narrow stone staircases. The role is physically active and requires the ability to lift and carry equipment and materials throughout the site.
