Payroll Manager

Location: Home-based – must be able to travel to Exeter approximately once a month
Contract: Permanent
Hours: Full or Part-Time 
Team: 5 Payroll Administrators/Seniors

The Role

An opportunity for an experienced Payroll Manager to lead and develop an established payroll team within an accountancy practice.

This is primarily a people management role rather than a hands-on processing position. You’ll manage a team of five based across multiple locations, focusing on coaching, workload management, performance and development, while supporting client payroll delivery when required.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead, coach and develop a team of 5 payroll professionals.
• Manage workloads, deadlines, holiday cover and team performance.
• Provide regular feedback, training and development opportunities.
• Ensure client payrolls are delivered accurately and on time.
• Support more complex payroll queries and processing when required.
• Oversee RTI, year-end processes, pensions and auto-enrolment.
• Support CIS processing and payroll/pension scheme setup.
• Work closely with the Practice Manager on team performance and development.
• Maintain strong processes and service standards across the payroll function.

Ideal Candidate

• Minimum 8 years’ payroll bureau/accountancy practice experience – essential.
• Proven experience managing a payroll team of 4+ people, ideally across different locations.
• Strong people manager with excellent coaching and development skills.
• Solid end-to-end UK payroll and pensions knowledge.
• Previous Sage 50 Payroll experience required.
• NHS pensions experience highly desirable, although not essential.
• Strong organisational, communication and stakeholder management skills.
• Based in the South West and able to travel to Exeter approximately once per month.
