Job Description:

To carry out the safe and competent butt fusion welding of polyethylene (PE) pipework and fittings on Thames Water infrastructure projects. The role involves ensuring all welds are completed to the required specification, quality standards, and health & safety requirements while maintaining accurate documentation and records.

Key ResponsibilitiesWelding & Installation

Carry out butt fusion welding of PE pipework in accordance with approved procedures and manufacturer guidelines.

Prepare pipes and fittings for welding by cutting, scraping, cleaning, and aligning materials.

Operate butt fusion welding machines safely and efficiently.

Complete welding activities on water mains, service connections, and associated pipework systems.

Inspect welds visually and ensure compliance with project specifications.

Perform rework and repairs where required.

Quality Assurance

Maintain high standards of workmanship and quality.

Complete weld records and quality documentation accurately.

Ensure welded joints meet project and client requirements.

Assist with pressure testing and commissioning activities when required.

Report any defects, non-conformances, or quality concerns immediately.

Health, Safety & Environmental

  • Comply with Thames Water health, safety, environmental, and quality procedures.
  • Conduct pre-use inspections of fusion equipment and tools.
  • Adhere to site-specific risk assessments and method statements (RAMS).
  • Wear and maintain appropriate PPE at all times.
  • Participate in daily briefings, toolbox talks, and safety meetings.
  • Maintain a clean and safe working area.

Equipment & Maintenance

  • Operate and maintain fusion welding equipment.
  • Conduct routine checks and report faults immediately.
  • Ensure calibration certificates and equipment records remain current.
  • Maintain welding equipment in good working order.

Essential RequirementsQualifications & Certifications

  • Valid Butt Fusion Welding Certification for PE Pipework.
  • EUSR Water Hygiene Card.
  • CSCS Card (or equivalent site access card).
  • Full UK Driving Licence (preferred).

Experience

  • Proven experience in PE butt fusion welding.
  • Experience working on water utility or infrastructure projects.
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings and specifications.
  • Experience with pipe sizes ranging from small distribution mains to large-diameter pipelines.

Skills & Knowledge

  • Strong understanding of PE pipe systems and fittings.
  • Knowledge of fusion welding procedures and quality standards.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Good communication and record-keeping skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.

Desirable Requirements

  • Electrofusion welding certification.
  • Thames Water project experience.
  • NRSWA qualification.
  • Confined Space Training.
  • First Aid at Work qualification.
  • Lifting Operations / Slinger Signaller certification.

Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience and qualifications.
Contract Type: Full-time / Contract (Project Dependent).
