Planning Manager

People in Power

People in Power are exclusively representing a tier one EPC client on the appointment of a Planning Manager for complex civil and electrical infrastructure projects.

The role will oversee programme management across tender and live construction, with a focus on substation design and build, cable route installations up to 400kV. Experience up to 132kV will also be considered. This is a senior role combining strategic oversight with hands-on delivery input.

You’ll manage a team of 5 direct reports and help shape a high-performing planning function, so strong civil or electrical project experience is essential.

What you'll be doing

  • Lead the planning function across power projects, setting clear standards, governance, and working practices for tender and construction programmes.
  • Develop and maintain project programmes that are logic-linked, credible, and aligned with delivery milestones and reporting requirements.
  • Support key contracts at senior level, working with operational, commercial, and project teams to track progress, manage risk, and plan recovery where needed.
  • Shape planning input for tenders, interpreting documentation, developing methodology, and contributing to strong programme submissions.
  • Own programme reporting and analysis, making sure progress updates, weekly reporting, and programme data are clear and actionable.
  • Act as the escalation point for planning issues, building strong relationships with clients and internal stakeholders and influencing outcomes through clear insight.
  • Maintain planning systems and controls, including the Primavera P6 central database and associated planning documentation.
  • Lead, coach, and develop a team of planners, managing performance, supporting recruitment, and driving continuous professional development.

What we're looking for

  • Strong leadership capability, with the ability to manage, motivate, and develop a planning team.
  • Strong technical planning expertise, with the ability to produce, review, and challenge complex programmes across civil and electrical infrastructure works.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with a practical and analytical approach to delays, risk, and recovery.
  • Ability to manage stakeholders effectively, building credibility with clients, project teams, and senior colleagues.
  • Commercial awareness, with an understanding of how planning supports delivery, contractual obligations, and project outcomes.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across functions and take ownership, operating effectively in fast-paced environments.

What you'll need

  • Degree qualified in Civil/Electrical Engineering, Construction Management, or a related discipline, or able to demonstrate equivalent practical experience.
  • Significant experience in a senior planning role within civil or electrical engineering, infrastructure, utilities, energy, or related contracting environments.
  • Relevant civil or electrical project experience within the power sector, including works such as substation design and build and cable route installations.
  • Experience on projects up to 400kV is highly relevant, though candidates with experience up to 132kV are also encouraged to apply.
  • Proficiency in Primavera P6 and/or Microsoft Project is required.
  • Previous line management experience and the ability to lead a team effectively would be strongly beneficial for success in this role.

What you'll receive

  • A chance to join a well-established provider of integrated utility infrastructure solutions with a strong reputation across the UK, Europe, and beyond.
  • The opportunity to take on a senior management role with real influence over planning standards, team development, and project success.
  • Mentoring and coaching programmes to help your ongoing professional development.
  • Ongoing technical and business training to help you grow in the role.
  • A hybrid working pattern.
  • 28 days’ holiday excluding bank holidays.
