This is a varied hands-on maintenance role covering planned preventative maintenance, reactive repairs, fault finding, servicing, installation and improvement works across a wide range of plumbing, heating, ventilation and associated mechanical systems.
The successful candidate will work across academic buildings, student accommodation, halls of residence and other facilities, helping to ensure that essential building services remain safe, compliant, reliable and efficient.
Depending on your experience, the role can offer responsibility ranging from hands-on technical maintenance through to senior-level technical leadership, supervision and coordination of works.
Key Responsibilities
* Carry out planned preventative maintenance and reactive repairs across a wide range of plumbing, heating and ventilation systems.
* Diagnose faults and undertake effective repairs and rectification works.
* Work on hot and cold-water systems, heating distribution systems, pressure systems, plant rooms and associated mechanical equipment.
* Carry out installation, upgrade, adaptation and improvement works.
* Support the operation, maintenance and fault finding of Building Management Systems (BMS).
* Undertake statutory and mandatory maintenance activities in line with relevant legislation and safety requirements.
* Ensure all work is completed to appropriate regulatory, health and safety and quality standards.
* Identify potential issues and recommend appropriate remedial action.
* Liaise with contractors, suppliers, manufacturers and other internal teams where required.
* Maintain accurate records of work completed and provide updates on job progress.
* Read and interpret relevant technical, mechanical and electrical drawings.
* Provide technical advice and assistance to colleagues, staff and other stakeholders where required.
* Support continuous improvement and identify opportunities for improved efficiency, reliability and cost savings.
* Keep up to date with relevant legislation, regulations, equipment and industry best practice.
* Work across different sites within the wider estate, including occasional regional locations.
* Participate in an emergency out-of-hours call-out rota.
Additional Senior-Level Responsibilities
For candidates with suitable experience, the role may also include:
* Leading and supervising maintenance, repair and installation activities.
* Providing technical guidance and support to other technicians.
* Assisting with the planning and allocation of reactive, planned preventative maintenance and installation works.
* Taking responsibility for more complex fault diagnosis and technical problems.
* Supervising upgrade, installation and adaptation projects.
* Supporting the development and mentoring of apprentices and less experienced technicians.
* Working closely with management to improve maintenance processes, systems and service delivery.
* Taking a lead role in ensuring works are delivered safely, efficiently and to the required standard.
About You
We are looking for skilled and reliable plumbing and heating professionals with experience within a commercial, industrial, public-sector or similar estates environment.
You will ideally have:
* A recognised qualification such as City & Guilds in Plumbing, Heating or Ventilation, or equivalent relevant experience.
* Experience working on heating, ventilation, hot water, cold water and pressure systems.
* Experience carrying out planned preventative and reactive maintenance.
* Strong fault-finding and diagnostic abilities.
* Knowledge of relevant health & safety requirements and statutory legislation.
* The ability to read and understand technical drawings.
* Good communication and interpersonal skills.
* The ability to work independently and as part of a wider technical team.
* Basic IT skills and experience using handheld/PDA systems or similar maintenance software.
* A willingness to work across different sites when required.
* A full UK driving licence
* Willingness to participate in an emergency out-of-hours call-out rota.
Desirable Skills & Qualifications
Experience or qualifications in the following would be advantageous:
* ACS / gas qualifications.
* Air conditioning systems.
* Building Management Systems (BMS).
* Basic electrical competencies.
* Mechanical building services.
* Multi-skilled maintenance.
* Working with contractors and external suppliers.
* Supervisory or team leadership experience.
* Apprenticeship mentoring or technical coaching.

We are open to candidates with different levels of experience, from experienced technicians through to senior/lead technicians who are comfortable taking responsibility for supervising works and supporting other members of the team.
