Principal Design Engineer – Temporary Works
Summary
Our client is seeking an experienced Principal Design Engineer to join their team in Watford. This role is ideal for someone with a deep understanding of temporary works and civil engineering who can provide technical leadership and innovative solutions. You’ll have the opportunity to make an impact on complex infrastructure projects and shape the future of construction.
Location and Working Pattern
Watford (hybrid arrangements to be discussed with the client but the initial induction will entail 3 months 100% office presence)

Responsibilities
- Lead the design and engineering phases of temporary and permanent works within major civil engineering projects.
- Develop, review, and approve design calculations, drawings, and technical specifications.
- Provide technical leadership on temporary works such as excavation systems, formwork, falsework, lifting operations, and working platforms.
- Collaborate with project teams and subcontractors to ensure compliance with programme and safety requirements.
- Offer guidance, mentorship, and support to junior engineers.
- Conduct site visits and assessments to verify design assumptions and resolve technical issues.
- Take part in coordination meetings, risk assessments, and constructability reviews.
- Ensure adherence to CDM regulations, industry standards, and company design procedures.
- Contribute to innovation and cost-effective design solutions that enhance safety and buildability.
Must-have Requirements
- Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (Master’s desirable).
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) or actively working towards chartership.
- Proven experience in temporary works design within civil engineering or construction.
- Sound knowledge of British Standards and industry guidance for temporary works.
- Competence in software such as AutoCAD, Revit, Tekla Tedds, STAAD Pro or similar.
- Strong understanding of construction sequencing and methodologies.
- Excellent leadership and stakeholder management skills.
Nice-to-have Skills
- Experience with major infrastructure projects.
- Continuous improvement mindset with exposure to innovative design techniques.
