A Principal Engineer role with genuine technical ownership.

We're recruiting for a Principal Engineer to join an established engineering organisation delivering complex control systems and engineering solutions across nuclear, defence, energy and other highly regulated sectors.

This is a senior role combining technical leadership, project delivery, client management and people leadership.

You'll have the opportunity to become a key technical authority within the business, working on complex projects where your engineering decisions have a direct impact on successful delivery.

The Role

You'll take ownership of the technical delivery of projects from requirements and design through to integration, testing, commissioning and close-out.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Leading complex control systems projects and technical solutions.
  • Reviewing and approving system architectures, designs and specifications.
  • Translating customer requirements into robust technical solutions.
  • Leading systems integration, testing, validation and commissioning.
  • Acting as a senior technical authority and conducting technical reviews.
  • Building and maintaining strong client relationships.
  • Leading technical meetings and resolving complex engineering issues.
  • Providing technical sign-off and engineering input during bids.
  • Managing project resources, budgets, risks and delivery.
  • Working collaboratively with software, hardware, workshop and project management teams.
  • Coaching, mentoring and line managing engineering colleagues.
  • Identifying and implementing continuous improvement opportunities.
  • Ensuring projects meet required quality, safety, client and industry standards.

What we're looking for

You'll ideally have:

  • 7+ years' experience in Systems, Controls, Electrical, Hardware or related engineering.
  • Strong systems integration experience.
  • Experience in nuclear, defence, energy or another highly regulated/safety-critical industry.
  • Knowledge of PLC, SCADA, HMI and/or AutoCAD Electrical.
  • Experience taking technical ownership of complex engineering projects.
  • Strong understanding of engineering quality, safety and compliance.
  • Experience leading, mentoring or line managing engineers.
  • Strong client-facing and stakeholder management skills.
  • Excellent technical communication and problem-solving ability.
