Principal Geoenvironmental Consultant
Penguin Recruitment
Middlesbrough | £50,000 - £60,000
A growing specialist consultancy is looking for a Principal Geoenvironmental Consultant to join its team in Middlesbrough.
This is a senior position for an experienced geoenvironmental professional who is confident managing projects, dealing directly with clients and providing technical input across contaminated land and ground investigation projects.
The role would suit someone who enjoys having a good level of responsibility and wants to be involved in both the technical and commercial side of projects, with the opportunity to help shape the continued growth of the regional team.
The Role
You'll be involved in a varied portfolio of work across the North East, including brownfield development, contaminated land, site investigation and remediation projects.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Managing geoenvironmental projects from initial proposal through to completion
- Preparing and reviewing Phase 1 and Phase 2 assessments
- Producing contaminated land risk assessments and conceptual site models
- Planning and managing intrusive ground investigations
- Interpreting soil, groundwater and gas monitoring data
- Developing remediation strategies and overseeing validation
- Providing technical advice to clients, developers and contractors
- Reviewing and signing off technical reports
- Preparing fee proposals and tenders
- Managing project budgets, programmes and resources
- Liaising with regulators and local authorities
- Supporting and mentoring junior members of the team
- Building and maintaining client relationships
- Identifying opportunities for repeat business and supporting the wider team with business development
There is also scope to get involved in more complex contaminated land and remediation projects, particularly across the Teesside and wider North East market, where historic industrial activity has created a range of interesting ground and environmental challenges.
About You
We're looking for an experienced geoenvironmental consultant who is ready to operate at Principal level, or an experienced Senior Consultant looking for the next step.
You'll ideally have:
- A degree in Geology, Environmental Science, Geoscience or a related subject
- Significant experience within geoenvironmental consultancy
- Strong contaminated land and site investigation experience
- Experience managing Phase 1 and Phase 2 investigations
- Good understanding of remediation and validation
- Experience managing projects, budgets and programmes
- Strong technical report writing skills
- Confidence dealing directly with clients and other stakeholders
- Experience mentoring or managing junior consultants
- A commercial approach and an interest in developing client relationships
- A full UK driving licence
Chartered status or working towards chartership would be advantageous, but the main focus is on strong practical and consultancy experience.
The Opportunity
This is a good opportunity to join a specialist consultancy where you can have a genuine influence on the continued development of the business.
You'll have the autonomy to manage your own projects and client relationships, while still having the support of an experienced technical team around you.
The role offers a good balance between technical delivery, project management, client contact and business development, rather than being purely report-based.
What's on Offer?
- £50,000 - £60,000 salary, depending on experience
- Senior position within a growing consultancy
- Varied contaminated land and geoenvironmental projects
- Strong exposure to brownfield and industrial sites
- Opportunity to manage key clients and projects
- Support with professional development and chartership
- Mentoring and leadership opportunities
- Clear scope for progression
- Middlesbrough-based role with regional project work
