About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and proactive Principal Health & Safety Coordinator to join a busy Construction Safety Team within a Housing & Landlord Services environment.

This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in improving health and safety standards across housing repairs, maintenance and construction projects, helping to ensure safe working practices and positive outcomes for residents, contractors and employees.

Working closely with the Construction Safety Manager, you will provide specialist health and safety advice, lead and support a team of Safety Coordinators, and help drive the implementation of health and safety strategies, systems and best practice across the service.

The successful candidate will be confident working with managers and delivery teams, challenging contractor performance where necessary, and promoting a positive and proactive safety culture.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead, manage and develop a team of Safety Coordinators, ensuring the delivery of a prioritised health and safety work programme.
  • Support the Construction Safety Manager in implementing and monitoring the health and safety strategy and management systems.
  • Act as the team's technical expert on the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations (CDM), advising stakeholders and supporting compliance.
  • Provide specialist health and safety advice, guidance and coaching to managers, employees and contractors.
  • Conduct and oversee construction site audits, inspections and assessments, including contractor and mobile workplace compliance.
  • Support risk assessments, incident investigations, accident reporting and the implementation of corrective actions.
  • Undertake specialist assessments where required, including hand-arm vibration (HAV) and noise assessments.
  • Monitor health and safety performance data, identify trends and prepare reports and recommendations for senior management.
  • Support procurement and contract reviews, ensuring appropriate health and safety requirements are incorporated.
  • Promote consultation, participation, continuous improvement and a positive health and safety culture.
  • Keep up to date with changes in legislation, regulatory requirements and industry best practice.

About You

We are looking for a confident and knowledgeable health and safety professional who can combine technical expertise with strong leadership and stakeholder management skills.

You will ideally have:

  • Significant experience in a construction health and safety environment, preferably within housing, repairs and maintenance or a similar operational setting.
  • Strong working knowledge of CDM regulations and relevant health and safety legislation.
  • Experience providing specialist health and safety advice to managers, contractors and operational teams.
  • Proven ability to lead, supervise, coach or develop health and safety professionals.
  • Experience conducting audits, inspections, risk assessments and incident investigations.
  • Knowledge of health and safety management systems and the Plan–Do–Check–Act approach.
  • Strong communication, analytical and report-writing skills.
  • The confidence to challenge unsafe practices and contractor performance constructively.
  • A proactive approach to problem-solving, continuous improvement and developing a positive safety culture.

Why Apply?

  • An opportunity to make a meaningful difference to the safety and quality of housing services.
  • The chance to influence construction safety standards across a wide range of housing projects.
  • A hybrid working arrangement, with approximately three days per week in the office.
