Principal Highways Drainage Engineer

As the Principal Highways Drainage Engineer, you will oversee the management and maintenance of the local highway drainage network, ensuring that reported drainage concerns are assessed and addressed promptly.

You will coordinate the investigation of issues and arrange appropriate remedial works through external delivery partners, as well as working with relevant utility and water organisations through planned maintenance programmes.

This role requires an office presence 3 days per week, 2 days working from home across a 37 hour week.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Strong knowledge and practical experience in identifying, assessing and resolving issues associated with highway drainage infrastructure.
  • Experience in the design of highway drainage systems, including the development and delivery of Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS).
  • Good understanding of relevant highways and flood risk management legislation, including the Highways Act 1980, Flood and Water Management Act 2010, Flood Risk Regulations 2009 and Land Drainage Act 1991.
  • Proven ability to build effective working relationships with stakeholders, partners and local communities.
  • Experience of assessing and commenting on highway drainage proposals through the development management process, together with an interest in supporting the delivery of drainage improvement schemes and taking forward new initiatives.

Experience Required:

  • Knowledge / experience of investigating and resolving highway drainage system problems.
  • Experience of highway drainage design and designing and implementing SuDS.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of key highway legislation including the Highways Act 1980 and flood risk management legislation including the Flood and Water Management Act 2010, Flood Risk Regulations 2009, Land Drainage Act 1991, etc.
  • Experience of working positively with key stakeholders and communities
  • Experience in reviewing highway drainage plans as part of the development management process, and willing to get involved in developing highway drainage schemes and progressing new projects.
