The Opportunity
Our client is looking for an experienced Principal Highways Structures Engineer to join their Bristol-based team, with a clear opportunity to develop and progress into a Bridge Manager role.
This position is particularly suited to an experienced Principal or Senior Engineer who has developed strong technical knowledge across highway structures and bridges and is now looking to take the next step into bridge management and structural asset management.
You do not need to already be a Bridge Manager. Our client is willing to invest in an experienced highways structures professional who has the technical foundations and ambition to develop into the position.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the management of a portfolio of bridges and highway structures.
- Review General Inspections, Principal Inspections and structural assessment reports.
- Identify structural defects, deterioration, risks and maintenance requirements.
- Support the planning of bridge maintenance, repair, strengthening and refurbishment works.
- Provide technical advice on bridges and highway structures.
- Review designs, assessments and engineering recommendations.
- Support structural risk management and maintenance prioritisation.
- Liaise with designers, contractors, inspectors and asset management teams.
- Ensure works comply with relevant highways standards, specifications and DMRB requirements.
- Support budgets, programmes and forward works planning.
- Progressively take greater responsibility for Bridge Manager duties as your experience develops.
About You
We are looking for an established highways structures professional who is ready to progress into a broader asset management and leadership position.
You may currently be working as a Principal Structures Engineer, Principal Bridge Engineer, Senior Structures Engineer, Senior Bridge Engineer or Highways Structures Engineer.
Previous experience holding the formal title of Bridge Manager is not essential.
Experience & Qualifications
- Strong experience within highways structures and bridges.
- Good understanding of bridge inspections, structural assessments, maintenance and repair.
- Experience working with structures such as bridges, culverts and retaining walls.
- Knowledge of structural defects, deterioration and lifecycle requirements.
- Understanding of DMRB and relevant highways/structures standards.
- Experience within a highways, infrastructure, consultancy or contracting environment.
- Degree, HNC/HND or equivalent in Civil or Structural Engineering.
- Chartered or Incorporated status would be advantageous but is not essential.
Development into Bridge Management
The successful candidate will be supported in developing their experience across bridge asset management, structural risk, inspection programmes, lifecycle planning, maintenance prioritisation, budgets, forward works programmes and stakeholder management.
The long-term objective is to enable you to use your existing technical structures expertise as the foundation to progress into a Bridge Manager position with responsibility for the management and performance of a highways structures portfolio.
