Altrad are currently on the lookout for a Principal Structural & Lifting Engineer to provide senior technical expertise in structural design, structural assessment and lifting engineering across the business.

The role will provide technical leadership on structural engineering activities, with particular emphasis on structures and components associated with lifting operations, temporary works and heavy lifting activities. The successful candidate will support operational and project teams with practical, technically robust engineering solutions and specialist advice.

Key Deliverables

  • Provide senior technical expertise in structural engineering, lifting engineering and temporary works to support operational and project requirements.
  • Lead and undertake the design, analysis, assessment and verification of structural systems, steelwork, temporary works and structural components.
  • Prepare and review structural calculations, design reports, technical specifications, drawings and other engineering deliverables.
  • Provide structural engineering input into lifting studies, Lift Plans and Lifting Risk Assessments, including assessment of load paths, stability, centre of gravity, structural capacity and lifting points.
  • Design and assess lifting-related structural components, including lifting lugs, trunnions, lifting beams, spreader beams, frames, supports and associated connections.
  • Provide specialist advice on lifting operations, lifting equipment and accessories where required.
  • Ensure structural and lifting engineering activities comply with applicable legislation, standards, company procedures and engineering best practice.
  • Provide technical leadership, coaching and mentoring to engineers and operational personnel.
  • Act as Technical Authority for Structural and Lifting Engineering where required under the company technical authority framework.
  • Support technical assurance, incident investigations, lessons learned and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Develop effective relationships with clients, project teams, operational personnel and other engineering disciplines.
  • Support the development and management of engineering capability and resources within the discipline.
  • Deputise for the Lead Engineer or Discipline Manager where required.

Key Requirements

  • Extensive experience in structural engineering within an industrial, construction, energy, infrastructure or engineering environment.
  • Strong technical background in structural design, analysis, assessment and verification, including steelwork, temporary works and structural components.
  • Experience designing and assessing lifting-related structures and components, including lifting lugs, trunnions, lifting beams, spreader beams and associated connections.
  • Demonstrable knowledge and experience of lifting engineering and lifting operations, including the preparation and review of Lift Plans and Lifting Risk Assessments.
  • Strong understanding of LOLER, PUWER, HASAWA and relevant British and international structural and lifting standards.
  • Ability to assess load paths, structural capacity, stability, centre of gravity and lifting arrangements.
  • Degree qualified in Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering or a related discipline (BEng / MEng / MSc) or equivalent.
  • Chartered Engineer status, or demonstrable progress towards Chartered Engineer status, preferred.
  • Minimum 10 years' relevant industry experience in structural engineering, with significant experience in lifting engineering, temporary works or related specialist disciplines.
  • Strong leadership, communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to provide sound technical judgement and produce clear, robust engineering deliverables.
